Smile NEW YORK | 120 West 57th Street | 299 FT / 91 M | 29 FLOORS

Quote:
The hotel will have 250 guest rooms and include 46 luxury suites, with the project's architects having worked on both the Royalton and the Standard Hotel in the past. All in all, given the location, the design is quite appropriate--while rooms are certain to have a hefty price tag, the hotel's views will be minimal given its location along 57th. Still, the site represents a welcome addition to one of the city's fastest growing thoroughfares.

Decent infill, IMO... there is work ongoing on-site and I'll swing by and get pictures either today or on Friday. I believe it's above ground level, but the business of the site makes taking pictures difficult.

It replaced a very beautiful building on 57th street, I'm biased against this project.

Agreed, the building they tore down for this was very nice. That said, let's hope its replacement is a quality piece of architecture. So far it looks promising.

Here's from 3 weeks ago. This should be above ground by now, and will become much easier to photograph soon.

I totally agree. It was a very nice architecture, is a shame that has been demolished and to be replaced for this.

Another blank wall. We really got to do something about these new building projects with blank walls in NYC.

They're there for a simple reason and that's because this is a hotel. If you get a mid block site wider then the plot is deep, then this layout, with rooms on either side of a long hallway, which has been popular with hotels everywhere for the past fifty years, makes the most sense. Also there's no guaranteeing for them they're neighbors won't build something to block the view on either side.

Additionally, while there is a building in the middle, there's a blank wall not shown in the rendering right next to it where the Hilton club went up a few years ago. Honestly, the rending is from a location you'll never be standing and or wouldn't have a view. You wont notice this blank wall from anywhere because of all the other towers on 57th st.

Was the original building that much of a gem, though? I agree that above the base it looked pretty good, though nothing I would have stopped to snap a picture of just walking through the neighborhood. And it looks like the base had been altered, to the detriment of the overall feel of the building.

Can someone post a picture of the building that this replaced? I'd like to decide for myself how nice the original building was.

Not really. There are buildings in Chinatown that looks like that. All you need to do is clean them up a bit.

Eh, there are a thousand buildings in NYC that aren't too different. TBH I like the building to the right of that one much more.

I REALLY like this tower. Black towers are becoming rarer in construction these days. I hope the windows will be darkened as well.
