Not a joke really, just the first movement in forever on anything resembling a supertall in Toronto/Canada.

Mizrahi is getting ready to shore on site, likely just for the retail for now, but still, all good.

Towers over 300m are so common now, I don't think they should be considered "supertalls" anymore. This is the 21st century. The new threshold should be 500m.

There are only about 100 supertalls in the world, concentrated in a handful of countries. Only about 5 skyscrapers exist taller than 500m.

There's no supertalls in Canada; a country with 522 skyscrapers (a.k.a. minimum 100 metres tall) And, to cover all the bases, 1 out 117 under construction is a supertall.

The US has 18 supertalls out of 2609 skyscrapers; 13 out 228 under construction (1 out of 20). Without New York, it's a paltry 3 out of 122.

Only 3 years to top out a complex 80 storey structure with 5ish underground floors at one of the busier intersections in Toronto?

In the world, as of today, there are 124 supertalls built, and 147 U/C, and 26 more on-hold, plus another 257 proposed, for a total of 554.

Only 10 years ago, in 2007, there were 33 supertalls in total...

How complete do you think it'll be at the end of 2020? It may not be finished by then, but I think it'll be topped out...

They have five floors to dig out plus a raft slab and drill caissons into bedrock. I can see this taking 18 months to two years to bring back to grade given that this is at Yonge and Bloor. Storage will be limited and you can expect restrictions on truck traffic. A floor a week is 80 weeks but, these aren't ordinary floors. You have double height retail floors. There's going to be a transfer slab to support the 70+ storey condo tower above the retail. How long have they been working on the transfer slab for the Residences on University? 6 to 8 months?

This just in, FCP is going to put 3m high fins as wind breaks at the top to protect workers at the base of the not-a-spire-they're-antennas-so-don't-count.* "It's about time this building was recognised for its height and seen as a supertall." a building manager was quoted as saying. "Far shorter buildings with non-functional pointy things on top are considered taller than us. It doesn't make sense."

*Not really, this is a fabricated story for entertainment solely.

Did someone just open the antenna argument because they superficially look like flagpole spires? That would suggest FCP's height and supertalldom is directly tied to everytime Rogers, Bell and, Telus upgrade their infrastructure.

The building has a parapet hiding the BMU. The irony of adding 3 more metres to the tower would give us online access to revised elevations which, in all likelihood, would have a total height less than the 298 metres we all believe is the height of the building now.

No. It's disingenuous to compare only the number of built supertalls in 2007 to everything under the moon in 2017. There had to be under construction, on hold and, dozens of proposed towers in 2007 as well.

I thought you could read the data between the lines better than that...

In 2007 there were 33 Supertalls BUILT...

In 2017 there are 124 Supertalls BUILT...

So, in the last 10 years, 91 supertalls have been built...

Nice try. Doesn't explain why you choose to "hide it" in between the lines in the first place. That's the disingenuous part of padding the stats.

There have been more 150 m towers built, more 100 m towers built and, more 35 metres tower built in the last ten years than all previous years combined. Supertalls as a percentage of all towers being built is still exceedingly small.

I think we both agree that we're in of a global real estate boom. We probably won't agree that this isn't any different than other real estate booms except for the scale of it. (never had 1.4 billion plus parking money in real estate all around the world before) The cycle will eventually end and, when, supertall proposals will be the first ones hit.

I totally agree the world is in a skyscraper building boom like never before, but as to when or if it'll end, and what may happen after, we don't agree...

Apparently tall buildings are not economically justifiable. They're all about prestige.
