Question Point & Shoot Camera Recommendations?

My colleague is looking to purchase a camera that can take clear and crisps photos of his son's middle school basketball games. He mentioned to me the gym where his son plays most of his games are dimly lit. He's know how the adjust the camera lighting, but the canon point and shoot he purchased sucked big time, and the action photos aren't good. He returned the camera, but is hoping not spend a lot of cash on a DLSR since it will be his wife who will be doing all of the picture taking.

Please any suggestions?

If a point and shoot camera could out perform a DSLR for zoomed-in low light action shots and price, then nobody would need to buy DSLR cameras.

There are some pretty great, not-too-expensive DSLRs out there that would do the job. You can get a Canon Rebel T5 with an 18-55mm lens and a 75-300mm lens for $550 at B&H: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...l_t5_dslr.html

I myself got my start on a Rebel camera. If you want to see what kind of shots people take with a T5 (this of course varies by photographer skill, as well, but it still helps to get an idea), check out this link:

T5 photos tagged with "sports":

You can see similar info for any brand and model of camera here: https://www.flickr.com/cameras

P&S cameras inevitably all have a shutter delay, some longer than others, but ANY delay makes it all but useless for shooting any kind of action such as sports.

Since there's a spending limit, the Sony full-frame a7 cameras are not candidates ($1000s).

Sony has the RX100 cameras. The original one doesn't have a fast burst mode to stop fast action nor a decent zoom. It's probably in the $500 range now. The latest one (mark 3) is $800s.

I got Olympus' Stylus 1 over the holidays and it has a much faster burst mode plus a 10x zoom. It's in the $600-700s and almost a pocket camera with neck strap. The wife could easily carry in her purse or on shoulder.
