Works on the tallest building in the world impress Brazilians

São Paulo - Brazilian businessmen in the civil construction sector who are on a trade mission to the United Arab Emirates were impressed yesterday while visiting the works of Burj Dubai, the building that intends to be the tallest in the world, in Dubai. "It is a first world construction," stated the secretary general at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, Michel Alaby, who is accompanying the group. The delegation, which has been in the Arab country since April 22, returns to Brazil on Saturday.

Burj Dubai will be 705 metres tall and will be ready in December 2008. The project developer is Emaar Properties, from Dubai, and Korean company Sansung is responsible for the construction. According to Alaby, at the site there are 65 cranes and 15 worksite lifts. There are 3,155 people working, most from India. "Each floor takes four days to be completed," he said.

Up to now the building already has 41 floors completed. Emaar does not inform the total number of floors the building is going to have, but Arab news agencies like Gulf News have already informed that the building will have at least 189 floors. The tallest inhabited building in the world is currently Taipei 101, in the capital of Taiwan, with 101 storeys and 509 metres height. At the beginning of this year, Kuwait announced that they are going to build an even taller building, at one kilometre in height, the Mubarak al Kabir Tower.

In Dubai there are already five buildings among the 100 tallest in the world, like Emirates Tower One, in 12th place in the ranking, at 355 metres height, Burj Al Arab, in 20th, at 321 metres; Emirates Tower Two, 25th at 309 metres; Century Tower, 56th at 269 metres and Chelsea Tower, 90th at 250 metres.

Burj Dubai will include residential apartments and luxury hotel Trade Mark Armani, belonging to brand Giorgio Armani. The construction of the hotel slab, which has an area of 5,600 square metres, consumed 225,000 tonnes of sand. The hotel should have 250 suites. The area around Burj Dubai will also include other great projects, like Dubai Mall, a shopping centre that intends to be the largest in the world, an artificial lake, a residential complex with nine buildings, restaurants and hotels. According to Alaby, the total investment in these projects totals US$ 14 billion and when everything is ready, it should generate 14,000 direct jobs.

Opportunities

According to Alaby, the greatest difficulty that the companies in the Emirates are facing is the lack of construction companies due to the great construction boom in the country. "They end up hiring Australian, Italian, Chinese, Indian, North American and Korean construction companies," he said. "We have great chances in this market, but it is necessary to find the correct partner," he finished off. Alaby believes that on returning from the trip, Brazilian companies should proceed with the contacts made with the Arabs and should establish partnerships.
