Melbourne - Australia's second city

Considering the popularity of my Sydney thread, I thought I would post these photos, from a visit last year.

Melbourne has a population of 4.1 million, nearly as large as Sydney's 4.6 million. Unlike Sydney, the city is structured on a grid layout. And unlike most 'new world' cities which ripped street cars out, Melbourne kept theirs. Which in Australian english are referred to as trams.

That's the downtown, now for the inner districts.
First, Fitzroy. Centre of the Melbourne hipster community.

They're both jaw-droppingly beautiful cities. I love the architecture of those stretches of two-story buildings in Fitzroy.

A bad rival to Wannabe-First-One, huh?

Bah, from Perth to Brisbane, Australia's blessed as they say. I expect both Hollywood and Wall Street to move over there.

Melbourne had a good idea to keep their trams working. I guess that Northern Hemisphere wise, there's some sort of northern feeling over there, while other places of the country feel more like California.

Thanks for the threads.

Is there any noticeable difference in climate between Melbourne and Sydney? I know they're only 500 miles apart, but the mountains and water are on different sides.

thanks, what a beautiful tour!

And I had heard that--despite Sydney's famous opera house--it is Melbourne that has much more of a cultural scene--theater, classical music, fine arts, etc. Someone correct me if that's not the case.

Went to the big 3 in Australia for work...and Melbourne was my favourite.

The city is kinda shabby-chic. Not glamorous or high-end but done right.

Well dressed, great food, drink, coffee and culture.

One little thing that stood out for me was how the average blue-collar worker would stop for a latte at an independent rather than the regular double-double swill here in NA.

Very nice pictures and tour. Thanks for sharing.

As I told you in your previous thread about Sydney, Melbourne is very pretty too. I´ve specially liked your pics of the downtown, with those modern skyscrapers and so much life in the streets. Some paintings are really curious, I like them.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

I think the cities are about equal in this area. Sydney does classical music better, though Melbourne has more art galleries. However, anyone involved in creative industries is probably flying between Sydney and Melbourne all the time.

Melbourne gets a little bit colder. The average high in summer is the same in both cities at 25.9C. But the average low in winter for Melbourne is 6C, and the average low in Sydney is 8C. Neither city gets cold enough for snow.

There's a big rivalry between the cities. But considering there are 7 million people movements between the cities a year when each city has a population of about 4 and a half million, one could say that the cities are twins and share the role of being the countries business and culture centre.

I love this video on youtube about the rivary.

Continuing the inner areas.
St Kilda, which is a beach side district on Port Phillip Bay. Not much of a beach but great urban feel.

Absolutely spectacular thread, Morn! Thanks so much for the amazing tour of a gorgeous city.

From the pics alone, Melbourne just seems like a perfect fit to me.

All the stuff Toronto talks about wanting to be... Melbourne is.

We should take notes. The urban quality in Melbourne is top notch, thank you for sharing.
