Eiffel Tower Question

When I watch early turn of the century videos or see early pictures from the first 20 years of the Eiffel Tower, I notice the façade on the first level is made up of this spade/clover shaped design. It looks really cool!

When I see modern pictures or video of the Eiffel Tower however, there's just a rectangular facing where it used to be.

Does anyone know what happened to that facing? Was it done away with? When and why?

The first floor has been rebuilt several time to accommodate to the growing number of visitors.

I am not even sure that the modern pictures of Eiffel tower that you have seen are updated.
The first current version of the first floor of the Eiffel Tower opened in October 2014.

I think he's talking about how the 2nd floor (1st floor to the French) had decorative lining that seems to be gone now.
