On track for 2008 opening

RSL's new stadium starts to take shape
Real Salt Lake's $110 million soccer facility in Sandy should be ready by early fall next year

http://www.sltrib.com/southvalley/ci_7406677

About 200 workers are at the site each day, rushing to get the stadium complete in time for a fall 2008 opening. The frame for a sound-buffering canopy planned to crest the facility is now going up.

While I am pissed off that the stadium didn't end up downtown, my preferred spot would have been south of little America, even the Fair Park would have been better than Sandy.

I am however glad that we have another major league franchise in the city/Valley. While it isn't one of the other big four, MLB, NFL or NHL it does add to our overall portfolio. It looks as if the design of the stadium is going to end up being pretty nice, I drove by the Columbus Crew Stadium last fall, and it looks about as cool as a large rodeo ground or junior college stadium. It's all metal bleachers with nothing to make it stand out, mind you it was the first soccer specific stadium in the league. But the "PREP H" lol will be a nice stadium.

We are a metro that now has NBA, MLS, AFL, and Triple A baseball, a lot of cities larger than us would love to have half that.

"Real will have more than 1,000 public parking spaces within a 5-minute walk of the stadium when it opens this fall, and Real officials say it won't be a problem to tie down 900 more spaces in the meantime. Within two years, Real will have another 1,000 spaces within a five-minute walk, and a new parking structure could be built in coming years."

Ok so for years the Expo Center needed a parking structure. Now add the RSL stadium and that area will REALLY need a parking structure. So why the heck is Sandy City waiting a few MORE years to built one?

I think they are using money that was originally slated to pay for the parking garage at the expo center to build the stadium. Not only losing the parking garage, but actually making the parking situation there even worse.

Parking is already a nightmare down there any time there's any kind of event at the Expo...adding this without requiring additional parking will be an even bigger disaster.

Morons.

That's Sandy's way of doing things, I guess...

Meh. They probably just figure they can park at Jordon Commons. Let Larry worry about it.

But seriously, as much as I love autocentric development - this place doesn't even sound fun to drive within 1/2 mile of. What's the point?

Either build the thing to be pedestrian-friendly (ala Jane Jacobs) or build some serious parking and road infrastructure.
