^Maybe he assumed the national highway of a first world nation would be four lanes divided (like it should be).

So he was possibly passing another vehicle, thinking that it’s 4-lane divided, and must have been utterly shocked to see a bus coming at him.

Scary stuff! Driving the Trans Canada from Kamloops to Alberta is supposed to be a spectacular experience, but instead its hair raising! Its better just to fly to Alberta. Flying is safer than driving anyways, but in this case its A LOT safer lol

At least with the 4 laning program the worst sections are being dealt with first. Hopefully the remaining 50s-60s era bridges will be replaced in the next 5 years. And a few KMs of 4 laning with each one of course! And I'm mainly talking about the ones in BC MOT jurisdiction! The original 1962 bridges in Glacier NP (Federal jurisdiction) were built plenty wide enough with shoulders. Just goes to show BCs substandard highway construction goes back decades!

They complete it. Very good.

Anyway, in the summer I made my regular stop in Rogers Pass where Parks Canada is twining the highway. Spoke with well informed lady in their visitor center and learned few things:
-Nearly 5% of total Park Canada entire federal budget is going in these projects on Highway 1 in BC.
-There is no planned animal overpasses and underpasses in Glassier Park which I still do not believe. It does not make any sense but this is what I was told.

Very interesting seems to go the projects with the snow sheds. They all got upgraded with LED lights and support pillars were reinforced. New twin highway will go beside the sheds and new sheds will be build extending the old one. That what it seems to me. Perhaps they will be done with most of the work next year.

Parks Canada probably doesn’t wanna add animal passes unless it’s going to twin Highway 1.

Speaking of that, there are some tunnels on Highway 1 where the existing 2 lanes are already divided. I wonder how that part will be widened.

Looks like BC is rolling back some of the speed limit increases on certain highways. Announcement tomorrow.

I'll wait to see specifics, but too bad if that's the case, as I found the vast majority made sense and improved compliance dramatically.

I would definitely like to see the speed limit on Highway 33 thru Joe Rich lowered to 90 again. Why they would bump it from 90 to 100 along there with all the driveways and road turnoffs, is beyond me! And especially considering how aggressive some people drive to and from Big White. Holy moley! As if the mountain is gonna disappear if they don't arrive a few minutes faster.

Very hazardous thru Joe Rich also with the lack of left turn lanes at the road turnoffs. If you have to turn left onto Philpott or Graystokes, and its 4 in the afternoon during ski season, you're gonna be waiting a while! Meanwhile, all the traffic behind you is held up.

So the undivided section of 97C now has a speed limit of 100 kph and the divided section, 110 kph.
Funny enough, Coquihalla stays at 120 kph.

I've driven that highway a ton over the years and I'm quite surprised to hear it's 100kph now. Does seem high for that stretch

Looking at the list of highways affected it seems like they've targeted specific areas of concern. I'm pretty familiar with most of those stretches and agree that they are more dangerous parts of the routes.

Shocked to see the limit on the Connector being dropped, but not the Coquihalla. Surely the Connector is better qualified for 120kph. It is the same design standard (except Hwy 5A) as the main Coquihalla, but probably 1/3 the amount of traffic. Maybe if they installed variable speed signs on 97C it could be kept 120. I would imagine BC is planning to add those on a few more highways.

A little surprising yes. I could see a lower limit on the big descent into the Okanagan valley but the rest of it seems fully able to support the current speed.

Speaking of speed limit...

It’ll be hilariously ironic if the new 4 lanes on the east side of Yoho, with at-grade intersections, are opened with a speed limit of 100 kph. Through Banff, with all but one intersection grade-separated, the speed limit is 90 kph for the most part.

^ At least it's not 70 in large stretches like it is through Jasper park

But yes I do believe that it is a national park guideline.

But we are getting a bypass lane at the gate so those of us who are just blasting right though won't have to wait in line while tourists ask the gate attendant what time they put the sheep out on the highway !

Right the gate bypass... Is that why there are 6 lanes underneath that animal pass in Yoho? (Global news said the pass can fit 6 lanes underneath.)
