Vietnam | HO CHI MINH CITY | Tan Tao Sky Tower | 84 stories | 300 meters

The Tan Tao Sky tower in the Binh Thanh District exemplifies innovation and the future of Vietnam. A truly unique design, the 300-meter, 84-story tower provides for an unprecedented international presence in the quickly developing Ho Chi Minh City, and is among the first structures in the country to boldly demonstrate a modern society competing in the global arena. The folding surfaces and diagonal exterior structure give the project its iconic presence in the city while joining multiple programs within a single structure of 270,000 square meters.

The building is designed and constructed with the newest structural technology, maximizing material with thin diagonal structure that takes advantage of the natural forces on a high-rise structure. The envelope and mechanical systems also bring new sustainable strategies to maximize energy savings. The design highlights and integrates these systems as visible to the public though its envelope. This new technology elevates the construction knowledge of the city for future development and attracts an international clientele on par with Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Kuala Lumpur.

A bending envelope allows dramatic sweeping views of the Song Sai Gon River delta. A mid-level sky lobby is integrated with the convention hall and broadcast center above retail and office space. The multiple programs joined by the sky lobby create a busy interior street on the 31st floor with views of the city for the public programs and most of the users of the building. Below the sky lobby are 5 levels of retail space and 19 levels of office space. Above the sky lobby, the 500 key 5 star hotel and 660 unit residential programs are separated by a large void, splitting the mass of the tower and giving light and air to these critical living spaces.

I'm kind of ambivalent toward towers with holes, but I lean toward liking this one. It could be hit-or-miss once constructed.
