Personally I prefer densification occurring the way you described, but it is also harder, and going to be more piecemeal than along some of the other lines. With all the easier TOD opportunities we have elsewhere (and are still creating) it may thin out developers willing to go through the additional hurdles of piecing land together, potential NIMBY issues, etc. Unless of course the neighborhood(s) get hot/trendy like Highland did a decade ago.
Yeah I pretty much agree with everything you just said. I tend to think that piecemeal development is better anyway and creates more "authentic" urban settings, unlike the isolated, inward looking TODs that failing mall sites often give us. I do agree however that it could be slow going with the developers, at least at first. But I also tend to be a bit of an optimist and I don't think it's all that far fetched that the area could become "cool and trendy" and start to redevelop faster (not to "promote gentrification", but realistically I think that it might happen here, and honestly the structures in the area do need to be replaced).

Edit: Watching the video again, I think I actually spotted a pretty substantial apartment structure under construction just before the Lamar station, a station that happens to have a rather large brownfield site immediately adjacent.

Isn't the DIA station also going to have a hotel, and airport terminal functions?

DIA is my favorite airport. I haven't been to any of the ones in Asia, but its definitely the coolest one in the US.

Yes, a 500-room hotel, meeting space, some additional ticketing areas, and security stations will all be going in as part of this project.

As part of a separate project there will be an additional parking module going in adjacent to the new hotel terminal; it will be an exact mirror of the other parking modules that are on either side of the terminal. There are also plans for an expansion to Concourse C that are being readied to be put out for quotations, but no timeline has been released for this project.

The West Rail line is opening a week from today! I'll be in Denver to celebrate and ride around, and I'm sure DenverInfill will have photos for all.

Anyone else going!?

FasTracks, is well underway

The West Corridor LRT, just celebrated it's Grand Opening! In addition to the West Corridor, The East Corridor, Gold Line, I-225 Corridor, US36 BRT and the first segment of the NW Corridor are under construction. The North Corridor may be under construction before year's end. The $500 million Denver Union Station is well underway and now the $500 million Denver International Airport South Terminal Expansion & Train Shed are also under construction.

Here is a photo tour of the West Corridor LRT, courtesy of contributors over at DenverUrbanism.com!

First, we'll start at the Denver Union Station Light Rail Terminal:

Here is a Station-By-Station tour from DenverUrbanism.com!
Quote:
...Time for a quick summary – this light rail corridor has been in the works for years as RTD bought the right-of-way in the 1980s. Funded as part of the voter-approved FasTracks initiative in 2004, this 12.1-mile, $707 million corridor will add about 5,000 parking spaces to the RTD park-n-ride network. The picture below gives a look at how RTD’s new light rail network maps will help guide passengers.

Auraria West Station (existing, but realigned and relocated for the West Rail Line) – 5th & Walnut Streets (no parking provided)

Decatur-Federal Station - Federal Boulevard & Howard Street (1,900 spaces)

Knox Station - Knox Court & 12th Avenue (no parking provided)

Perry Station - Perry Street & 12th Avenue (no parking provided)

Sheridan Station - Sheridan Boulevard & 12th Avenue (800 spaces)

Lamar Station - Lamar Street & 13th Avenue (no parking provided)

Lakewood – Wadsworth Station - Wadsworth Boulevard & 13th Avenue (1,000 spaces)

Garrison Station - Garrison Street & 13th Avenue (no parking provided)

Oak Station - Oak Street & 13th Avenue (200 spaces)

Federal Center Station - Routt Street & 2nd Place (1,000 parking spaces)

Red Rocks College Station - 6th Avenue Frontage Road & Arbutus Drive (no parking provided)

Jefferson County Government Center/City of Golden Station - 6th Avenue & Johnson Road (705 parking spaces)

Also, along the new West Line corridor is a pedestrian & Bike path which parallels LRT line and integrates with the stations and neighborhoods! Here's a slid show by Ryan Dravitz:

Wanna see something cool?

I made a time lapse of the Kiewit cam. Jun 2012-May 2013. I would have continued back even further, but Kiewit changed their cam set-up in Jun 2012 to the current one. I may go back to Dec 2010 and make a time lapse from there someday. But still, you can watch very cool changes over the last year in the span of 30 seconds.

It will actually be complete in late 2015 due to delays associated with the site/infrastructure work that had to be finished before the building construction started. The station and hotel will be operational when the East Line opens in early 2016.

Congrats, Denver is making great progress.

One thing that strikes me as odd every time I look at the FasTracks map is the division of the system. It seems like the entire southern half of the city is getting LRT and the entire northern half is getting commuter rail.

Is there a reason for this and are the people in the north half not a little pissed that they won't see the higher service levels that the southerns do? I know that seems odd the way the system is divided between north and south is even more so.

What is the rational behind this?
