Agreed. One word would have made a tremendous difference here. My guess is that most fans will shorten it on their own, leaving out "resort" when they refer to the venue. Maybe we can even use the initialism "TSA" and make everyone think it has to do with airport security.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but it's an advertisement they're paying for. So, it's their call. (I worked in advertising for a long time, so I'm un-irked by this sort of thing. In fact, from their perspective, I think it's incredibly smart.)

I wonder, though, if there will be some confusion about concerts. USAC hosts plenty of concerts, and so does the actual Talking Stick Resort. I hope they don't run into people with tickets going to the wrong venue because they were confused about whether a certain band was playing the Talking Stick Resort itself or the Talking Stick Resort Arena.

I would hope if you're going to see a Foreigner tribute band, or whomever they usually have at the casino, you realize they're not going to be playing an arena

Haha. Good point. Maybe the type of act will sort it all out.

I could see that. In San Diego, Viejas Arena at SDSU is sometimes confused with Viejas Casino. Also the old Sports Arena is now called the Valley View Casino Center.

Random thought:

With a new relationship between the Suns and the Indian tribe, I wonder if the idea for a hotel adjacent to the stadium might be re-kindled. The Tribe could open and operate a hotel there that is sans gaming and offer some kind of direct shuttle to their 2 casino's along the 101 and in Spring out to Salt River Fields.

Your random thought made me think of another random thought/question. Wasn't there talk, or hopes, or plans of bringing a casino to downtown? Or am I imagining that completely?

Really stupid question that I should probably know the answer to, but could someone here define the geographical boundaries of Roosevelt Row for me? I'm down in Phoenix at least once a month and would like to see it with my own eyes (haven't lived in the Valley since 2009).

I would define the the core of Roosevelt Row as the segment of Roosevelt from 3rd Ave to 7th St. The official Roosevelt Row organization has a broader definition that is outlined here: http://www.rooseveltrow.org/about/ro...arts-district/

Thank you much! One of the reasons I asked is because of the Roosevelt Row website's broader definition.

Anyone know what/where this is in the Phoenix area? Built in 1914.

/\ Correct! I was surprised this building existed. It's the Crosscut Power Facility. From SRP's website:

Quote:
The Crosscut power facility has been an important part of SRP's power production system. From 1912 to 1914, the Crosscut hydro generating plant was built as a source of auxiliary power. Its construction added nearly 40% to the Project's generating capacity. It was built on the new Crosscut Canal between the Grand and Arizona canals. This location was selected because two major electric distribution lines passed nearby.

From 1937-1941, SRP began expanding its power resources in response to shortages, load growth and a desire to ease the system's reliance on hydropower. SRP constructed a diesel plant at the facility that operated from 1937 until 1949. The steam portion was operated from 1941 to 1974.

Functions at the Crosscut facility have continued to evolve since the early 1950s. Although the diesel and steam units are no longer in service, the hydro plant still produces power during the hot summer months.
So apparently this hydro plant still produces power in the summer months!? Pretty cool if you ask me. Especially since it's from the early 1900s. Normally the water from the crosscut canal is rushing through and there is a waterfall, however, the canal is apparently shut off right now because they are altering the canal path downstream for that one development (forget the name).

It sucks that the original windows are obviously gone and half filled in, but it's still pretty cool, considering all things like this in this city are typically long-demolished.

A few other pictures:

And then this big old warehouse next to it from the 1930s.

^ Very cool. Those look like structures from Pittsburgh or some place like that, not Phoenix.

Color me ignorant. No idea that existed. The warehouse has a certain art deco flair to it.
