Now they just need to re-pave the damn track, I hear there are potholes everywhere. Apparently Bronco is pissed that it is going to stay.

What's the reason for wanting it shut down?

They were planning on expanding the landfill to where Race City is.

They can build a new landfill here in the Southwest. I'll work there.

Does anyone know when the land is supposedly required for the landfill?

If it isn't needed immediately or in the next few years, why not allow Race City to lease it until it is needed? Will it not generate more revenue for taxpayers than a vacant lot?

I do, however, think that Race City should be considering a permanent location. The nature of leases is that they do end at some point, so they may as well be prepared by preemptively starting to think about a new location.

Good news for race city altogether, and I can get behind that even though I'm not an automotive enthusiast.

What pisses me off though is the talk of people streetracing more and putting people at risk if it were to close down. By that same logic, it's a good thing there aren't any shooting ranges, archery clubs or kickboxing gyms that might close down, else these people start carrying out their hobbies in public.

Yeah, most people that street race could care less if it closes or not.

I wouldn't mind more shooting ranges though, it takes me forever to get to mine.

I call bullshit on that guys, I know quite a few people who use Race City on a regular basis, and if it weren't for the track some of them would likely race on city streets.

True, but that's beside the point.

Cars and tuning are a big part of our culture (how else could The Fast and the Furious be so successful), and we should provide a safe venue for those who wish to indulge in it, that's all I'm saying.

I agree. Tell that to the Race City proponents (yes I know, not all were saying this) who are/were using the "more racing on city streets" line as an argument.

No argument there, which is why I support the decision (as I said earlier).

We do need to find a permanent location for Race City. Finding that much spare land is a problem though.

Land isn't the only problem though. Just the money to build a new track and the related venues is easily into the 8 figures. I believe they had figured somewhere north of $25M

I agree with those people, closing the track would result in more street racing. The law doesn't mean much to some people and is only a deterrent when they get caught, and even then...

or the storyline. Hot girls and nice cars are good enough for a 4 film franchise.

Wasn't there plans for a race track at Mallzac?

I agree with Calgarian. The track is in use pretty much 7 days a week throughout the spring summer months. Whether it be for carclubs, race events, they have even done new car tests there with car magazines. Not to mention concerts like Vans Warped Tour.

Having a safe and sanctionned place for automotive enthusiasts to push the cars to the limits, in my opinion, is a great thing. Even with race city there are still those who will choose the streets. But without it I would almost guarantee it would be far worse.

Here is a great article from SE Calgary News:

http://www.secalgarynews.com/feature...ve-race-track/

I do hope that a new facility will be developed when the lease does finally expire. There is and will always be a need for a facility like these as long as people love their cars.
