The Flames may not win many games this year, but it'll be a lot less painful to watch. Play by play guy Peter Loubardias was let go by SportsNet today.

He's a good guy, but his (fake, I hope) broadcaster voice was... ear shattering at best.

FLAMES CLOSEST CANADIAN TEAM TO THE SALARY CAP

Two weeks later and the frenzy has become calm.

Now two weeks into the meat of the off-season, it's time to take a quick look to see where every team in the league stands with regards to the salary cap, starting with the Canadian clubs.

All the numbers below have come from capgeek.com and as a reminder, the NHL's salary cap for the upcoming 2011-12 season is $64.3 million while the cap floor is $48.3 million.

The Calgary Flames, who have 12 players on their roster with either no movement, limited no trades, or straight-up no trade clauses is Canada's team closest to the salary ceiling according to capgeek.com, with a cap number of $61,008,334. Despite being so close to the cap, the Flames still were interested in free agent Brad Richards, who eventually signed with the New York Rangers.

Just a million or so dollars behind Calgary are the defending Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks at $60,408,333. The Canucks have had a busy off-season locking up Kevin Bieksa to a five-year deal and roll players like Sami Salo and Chris Higgins, among others.

According to capgeek, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are still reportedly in the market for a top-six forward despite adding Tim Connolly, are at $59,115,000
.

After signing Erik Cole and re-signing Andrei Markov to sizable deals, the Montreal Canadiens are sitting at $56,620,510.

In an almost identical position to Montreal from a cap perspective are the Edmonton Oilers who have $56,400,000 committed after buying out the contract of defenceman Sheldon Souray.

The Ottawa Senators have cash to spend as they are currently at $51,870,834.

Even after signing their captain Andrew Ladd to a new contract, the Winnipeg Jets are sitting just under the salary cap at $46,419,166 in salary for next season.

Souray was a good acquisition for the Oilers in the first couple of years until he got injured multiple times, and then turned into a over weight lazy sour grapes.

The verdict is out really if Connolly can stay healthy. He certainly doesn't have the track record to say so.

Who the hell does Toronto have that they'd be anywhere close to Calgary in salary? We've overspent on a ton of losers, plus we have several top players in each category (except centre)... while it sucks, at least it makes sense that Calgary is in deep money wise. Guys like Kipper and Iginla and J. Bo. cost money no matter what team they're on.

I just hope last year was J-Bouw's final year at his Mexican timeshare in April. Maybe he'll actually try and re-schedule it a bit later for the first time in his hockey career.

As stupid as the Flames are recently.. occasionally we manage an *actual* steal:

Brendan Morrison (C): 66-9-34-43, +13, $1.25 million ($29,000/point)

Tim Connolly (C): 68-13-29-42, -10, $4.75 million ($113,000/point - almost 4x as much)

About the only major difference between the 2 is their +/-, and age: Connolly is 5 years younger. However, Morrison is a goddamn Ironman by comparison. Morrison gets hurt, sure - but once. Then goes to play the rest of the season.

Connolly had 4 separate injuries last year (groin, head, hip, nasal). Everyone talks about how his last concussion was in 2006 - OK, but since then he's also had 7 other injuries - oblique muscle, "illness", groin (twice), hip, back, rib. That's 11 season-impacting injuries in 4 seasons. The dude is bloody fragile.

Note: just pulling stuff from tsn.ca, please don't crucify me if their stats are slightly off.

Great news about Morrison, I was really impressed with him last year. Here's hoping he can stay healthy, the Flames were amuch better team when he was playing, Tanguay would actually shoot the puck instead of just looking for Iggy.

The Leafs are paying so much for Connolly because they can afford to. Even if he bombs, it's not like there's a wealth of centres they're missing out on. His contract is only two years and it'll take that long for a true #1 centre to come out of the Leafs development system. Who knows, maybe he'll be healthy from now on. At worst he's a two year stopgap.

I'm not sure why people are so weirded out by this. It is our national symbol after all.

There are plenty of "Stars n' Stripes" themed logos on American teams. A little more patriotism wouldn't hurt in Canada if you ask me.
