Wow quite the tour of Addis Ababa and the surrounding area.... The poverty looks pretty extreme. Very depressing to see millions living like that. And the children towards the end made me sad... What is their life going to be like??

Exactly. These countries need birth control and education. You need to know that if you are going to have children you need to be able to provide for them. It looks so chaotic there, people all over the streets and even the busy inner-city roadways.

What are all those multi-colored plastic bottles and jugs for? They are everywhere.

Looks like an urban nightmare, hard to believe this was originally a planned city...

Great pictures though.

A long time humanity migrated out of this place and settled the world.

Now the rest of us look back and wonder what the happened to the place :/

How else would they transport drinkable water?

How about actually displaying the photos here in this thread, rather than just posting a link...

While it's poor, the people and to an extent the place don't look destitute... It mainly looks boring more than anything.

I agree Nineties Flava, I don't see the reason for all the hand wringing. It looks dirty, and there seems to be very little infrastructure. I see a dirty, busy market place, a fair number of individuals with a decent set of clothes on their back, a few cellphones. My experience growing up in impoverished places is that they aren't as brutal as they might seem at first

If they're lucky, they might inherit the first Afro Disneyworld, pretty much like Paris got its Euro-Disney. Then, it might seem less redundant a place. The problem with poor folks is that they don't get to experience the exhilaration of pre-packaged, air-conditioned logotyped environments; and that there are too many of them.

Some of the smartest people I know are from Ethiopia/Eritrea. It's such a shame the country is in such poor shape, the people really deserve better.

Are the slums worse than they look (which is pretty damned bad) or look worse than they are (in a sense that you can't judge a book by its cover)? I would not be brave enough to venture into some of the neighborhoods featured (although I did go through some of the most wretched neighborhoods of Shanghai...even so, not on the level depicted in the Addis Ababa photos).
