I think adding arbitrary spires just to achieve a title of "tallest in the west" is pointless and futile. Back when Chrysler was being built and it had a hidden spire that was attached so that it could be the tallest in the world, well that meant something. But tallest in the west of some river on the North American continent due to a pole sticking up is nothing more than meaningless.

This building is built with quality, detail, great engineering, and a timeless shape. I think that is much more important, and IMO this will be one of the great icons of American skyscrapers, along with the pyramid, Sears Tower, Empire State, and WTC.

Walking along Fremont St today, 1:19 PM. Looks pretty 'topped out' to me.

From that angle you aren't seeing the highest level of crown framing so no matter how it looks it isn't topped out. You actually can see what I believe to be the top (as yet incomplete) from the other direction (north of the building).

I think the outer-form of the crown will be just a tad bit taller than the top of the inner-crown (the x's). I'd guess its about 8-10 ft short of the very top.

It's interesting that on the south/southeast side of the building the glass has been installed about eight floors higher than on the other sides.

This is so much better than the dated looking Wilshire Grand in L.A. imo. I like the fact it doesn't rely on a stupid spire. Unless the spire is an integral part of the design they don't look good imo. I especially don't like them when they are tacked onto the side and aren't symmetrical.

Technically salesforce tower will be 1,100 ft tall when you consider Marc Benioff's office is on the top floor. Last I checked, he's like 30 ft tall. If a spire counts, Marc Benioff counts!

11:30 am

More steel installed today on the top.

The cranes are oriented to the north away from the wind coming from the south. This is a sign that work is not being done with the cranes due to the weather. Wind at 11:30 am was brisk in the Civic Center. This will slow the work for today on the top of the building.

This view is from the west in the Civic Center.

I find something a bit egotistical about how Pelli is planting all these super tall towers that have the same obelisk shape in different cities.

I think the trio of SF Tower, 181 Fremont, and Oceanwide, does actually share some similarities, with the trio of 2IFC, Bank of China Tower, and the HSBC Building. Although 181 Fremont and Oceanwide won't be as brightly lit, the skyline will definitely be a sight to behold in both day and night.

I am curious if the crown of 181 fremont and the lines on Oceanwide Center will light up at night. It would be pretty lame if they didn't.

You should be addressing that on the 181 Fremont thread however what holdup? They are installing the glazing (windows) and just about every day there's a new row of windows in place on the construction cam . They appear to be working on the 9th row from the top now.

Some days the weather may be too bad (windy, mainly) for operation of the cranes so that could cause one-day delays for both Salesforce and 181 Fremont.
