Came across this today. It has been rumored for a while around the airport. It is on the south side at Marion Street about halfway between Upper James and the airport property.

Application Type: Formal Consultation
Address: 9075 AIRPORT RD W
File Year: 2023

These cheap-build hotels are still welcome, to me, even if they're not particularly attractive.

It's just too bad so many have been going up along suburban arterials like Upper James, though there's a good case for them near the airport.

I wonder how many rooms the city now has in total, and what proportion are in the core? A revamped convention centre and arena may lead to more downtown.

Not pretty, but it adds some intensification that hopefully makes future height easier to slip in.

Just a reminder, the lands around the airport are regulated by federally mandated height restriction that the city cannot override.

I meant in that general part of town, like, new southern suburbs in general, not necessarily right beside.

I'm not sure I'm keen on the location. Either put it right by the airport or right out at Upper James. The only thing it's close to is an elementary school, which causes enough traffic issues on its own with the lack of proper pick-up/ drop-off space.

It's a roadside hotel lol, it's not a massive traffic generator.

How much closer to the airport can you realistically get than this anyway?

It’s not even the worst looking hotel. Definitely a welcome development.

There's no sidewalks, but it's literally walking distance to the airport...

I believe the City is planning to reconstruct and urbanize Airport Road in the next few years, which I imagine would add sidewalks. The airport itself would need to add one as well, however.

In the 10 year capital budget it looks like the urbanizing of Airport Road could start as early as 2025.
