They're probably referring to volume and square footage.

What is the floorplate size of this tower? How much space is between the outer glass facade and the central core?

Maybe they could attract more tenants if they just took my suggestion of adding a Windows on the World restaurant into Two World Trade Center.

Silverstein Properties’ Janno Lieber and Serge Demerjian Talk WTC

By Daniel Geiger
9/11/12

Quote:
What’s next for you, Serge? Construction seems like it’s winding down at the WTC site.
Mr. Lieber: Serge’s role has evolved. He came here as an architect. He’s now the construction manager for the Tower 2 project, which is only coming up to grade—but it’s how many square feet below grade?

Mr. Demerjian: It’s 400,000 square feet. The footprint is much bigger underground: it’s probably like four stories. It’s loading docks, mechanical systems, retail corridors, power distribution networks, spot networks.

Is it the biggest underground building in the city no one knows about?
Mr. Demerjian: Yeah. This site is 3.5 million square feet of below-ground space.

Agreed. It would be laid out in a different way though.

Well, they're talking about the entire underground complex, not just the shopping mall.

It may not seem like this is rising any time soon, but Silverstein believes it will, and I'm sure he'll continue to push for it...

WTC Site to Be Completed Within 5 Years: Silverstein

By: Justin Menza
September 11, 2012

Quote:

The World Trade Center site should be rebuilt by 2016 or 2017, developer Larry Silverstein told CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” on Tuesday, the 11th anniversary of 9/11.

“It’s become the passion of my business life to complete the Trade Center,” said Silverstein, president of Silverstein Properties. “Originally, I thought it could be done by 2011. That was not meant to be, but I would say by 2016, 2017, everything should be done. All the buildings should be completed.”

What rises out of the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will be unique, Silverstein said. “The buildings will be spectacular. They’re all done by iconic architects of world class quality,” he said.

If he believes by 2016,maybe tower 3 should begin sometime in the middle of 2013 and tower 2 late 2013 with dates around early 2016 and late 2016/early 2017 respectively.

so is the plan to keep the building as a stump?
do they stump one or both buildings?
it looks like they are just slowing down the construction....

dont you think they should at least finish one of the two?

when will the first part of the train station / subway / shoping mall open?

Im making plans for a trip to New York
love to be one of the first to walk the tunnel connection to ONE WTC.

Lets not forget that he was able to build 4WTC and I guess something everyone may have forgotten about. Remember the natural rock situation under 4WTC, I bet it cost him a lot of money to have the structure redesigned. Also speaking from a hypothetical point of view, wasn't T4 halted as a stub and not worked on for months in 2012 above the first floor or two?

BTW new concrete poured to the East of the stump.

They're building stumps because the Port Authority is paying Silverstein to construct enough of the buildings to 1) complete the retail part of the complex 2) Complete the parts associated with the transit hub. In the case of 2WTC, it's just the entrance and exits. 3WTC includes several subsystems (electrical, ventilation, heating/cooling) for the underground sections, which is why they're building more of it than 2WTC.

Hopefully Silverstein meant that all the towers will be built as originally proposed and not just the stumps.

That's exactly what he meant. He's never doubted that he could get the buildings built, but it wouldn't be wise of him to say so if he thought otherwise. He's always said his new life's mission is to complete the WTC. Let's hope he gets to do that.

I agree. It would be silly to not show confidence he could get the buildings up. However, there's nothing binding about that statement. Even he admits he was hoping to have them up by 2011.

Remember even the original World Trade Center had delays. 3 and 7 World Trade Center weren't built till much later. The same thing applies here with 2 and 3 World Trade Center. They will be built, but not till much later.

^^ The good thing is that they're already partially built, unlike the old 3 and 7. Hopefully the recent rumors regarding 5WTC are true too.
