Just came back from a night downtown and passed the site. There was a crew putting out traffic cones on all sides of it. Odd to see them working late on a Saturday night. Happy to see things moving forward!

I am not sure if these have already posted, but the architects' website (lydonlynch.ca) has some nice renderings of Waterside Centre:

Back in 2005, Serge Lacasse took a great photo of the "canyon effect" down Hollis Street:

It would be interesting to see a new photo once Waterside goes up, since that will make 3 new buildings since 2005 -- Salter's Gate and the Vic apartments are the others (the building on the left in the distance is the Waterford, which is somewhat new as well). Had the United Gulf towers gone up, they also would have contributed to this view.

Wow, I never realized the great build-up effect that Waterside is going to crease with Morse's and 1801 Hollis coming in from the bridge.

If we ever fill those two giant empty lots, and re-clad the BMO/RBC buildings Halifax could really end up having one of the nicest downtowns in the country.

this building should end up creating a nice transition between the office towers and historic properties

I wonder how long it will be before a crane is on site?

When i was by this afternoon they were preparing to pour concrete footings along the sidewalk. I suspect a crane is a couple months out. But there is a buzz around the area, finally.

Now that they are finally moving forward, it gives me hope that Nova Centre is next. Considering this place was holding out hopes government would move in, I wonder if they got other office commitments?

This picture, with Purdy's Wharf Tower II in the background, gives me a much more enthusiastic impression for how appropriate this building is for this location.

I work in the BMO building and IMO this is a very necessary building. That little block from where this building will stand and further north is very quiet. No pedestrian traffic, almost all of the shops at the little historic properties mall are either closed or in the process of closing. This is a very exciting little building.

The problem with the Historic Properties Mall is that it's so anonomous. The entrance is really well hidden. I was living in Halifax downtown for a year before I realised there was a mall there! Same goes for Scotia Square. I can't believe how tiny the entrance on Duke street is! As a visitor, walking down the street, you'd never know there was a Mall there!

It's also traditionally had too much of a tourist focus, in terms of the types of shops that were there. I was in Ottawa in December and I was surprised how similar Byward Market was to the Historic Properties here, except that the shops and restaurants in Byward seemed like they'd attract a lot of local shoppers, not just people looking for pewter souvenirs.

Well, maybe we'll get some new bars as many have closed over the past number of years.

I've been trying to figure these out. They are the extent of the work so far. I think they will be the base of a substantial construction fence as they have cast in place bolts to possibly attach fence posts to.

I think these might be the reinforcing walls that are referred to in this story - http://thechronicleherald.ca/busines...zlQcA.facebook

“From my understanding, the biggest issue is they have to shore up the sides of the buildings,” Coun. Dawn Sloane (Halifax Downtown) said Friday.

“They don’t want to take down what’s already there — the existing outer shell of the buildings.”

Sloane said she discussed the project about 10 days ago with Scott McCrea, who heads Armour.

“He’s going to have to have these walls reinforced so that when they’re doing the work in behind, it doesn’t fall down on people,” Sloane said.
