Another little update:

Rumour has it that Air Canada Jazz is looking at starting service between YKF (Waterloo) and Ottawa/Montreal. Equipment would be Dash 8. It is not clear if the routing would be YUL-YOW-YKF-YOW-YUL on the same aircraft or if separate individual routes would exist. Stay tuned.

^Thumbs up.

YKF is growing up. Makes sense though...RIM has its two research facilities in Ottawa and KW, Sun Life and Manulife have big offices there, plus connecting to YUL would also offer an alternative to taking a cab to YYZ (which I know from experience is lame and expensive) for international travel.

I'm surprised Paris isn't year-round. Any rumours about Lufthansa?

YKF-YOW flights were offered by QuikAir, weren't they?

From Today's Ottawa Citizen:

Westjet will begin daily, non-stop service between Ottawa and Vancouver on Nov. 4, the airline announced. It also will increase to five flights weekly its seasonal service between Ottawa and Orlando, Florida.

The Westjet YOW-YVR (Vancouver) nonstop already exists (I flew it a month ago). It started in May originally as a seasonal service, but Westjet recently announced that they will retain the service year-round. This is probably what the Citizen means.

The Westjet YOW-MCO (Orlando) increase to 5x weekly is nice news, however Westjet are also reducing YOW-TPA (Tampa) to 2x weekly. Overall there is no change in YOW-Florida capacity with Westjet.

As for some of the other comments:

Paris won't be year-round for a long time, if ever. Archaic travel agreements between Canada and the EU state that carriers can only fly between France and Montreal/Toronto. Transat is getting around this loophole by originating the YOW-CDG route in Toronto. So the routing is YYZ-YOW-CDG-YOW-YYZ. For Ottawa pax this is a nonstop but the actual route isn't. It wouldn't be allowed without YYZ.

The Canadian government is currently working on a new open-skies agreement with the EU, so hopefully a new agreement will facilitate some new routes. The optimist in me sees some potential for a YOW-CDG nonstop with Air France, but this would be difficult what with Air France flying 3x daily to YUL.

The best we can hope for right now is for a successful season on YOW-CDG resulting in Transat committing to a full summer schedule May-Sept next year.

As for Lufthansa, no rumours. A YOW-FRA nonstop is inevitable within, I'll say, 3 years. As much as I'd like to see Lufthansa fly it, I believe it Air Canada will fly this route when they receive some 787s (2010). I'm hopeful this route might start sooner but ...

i wonder if YEG or YOW will get one 1st...but yes, both will be looked at once 777 and 787 enter service and free up 767 for "smaller markets"

YOW has updated the expansion section of its website. New photos and a good news/bad news update on construction and the reuse of the hangar timbers, etc.

Has anyone heard anything regarding new routes? I read something about Moncton wanting a direct link, but I was actually wondering about SFO, Frankfurt, or other transborder/internation links.

Continental Launching YOW-CLE(veland) Sept 30th

Continental have loaded 2 daily YOW-CLE flights loaded into their res system taking effect September 30th. This route was announced a few years ago but never got off the ground at the time.

Here's the sked (all flights on E135):

YOW-CLE
CO2311 0630-0815 X7
CO2311 0930-1115 7
CO2705 1440-1627 6
CO2705 1735-1922 X6

CLE-YOW
CO3088 1230-1404 6
CO3088 1525-1659 X6
CO2594 1810-1944 6
CO2594 1930-2104 X6

This now makes 3 new transborder for YOW this year with MSP starting in August, LAS in September, and now CLE in late September/October, not to mention another player (United) on YOW-IAD.

I thought it would be fun to write how many destinations we have listed not by airline but by location.

Canada (18)

-Calgary
-Edmonton
-Halifax
-Hamilton
-Iqualuit
-London
-Montreal
-North Bay
-Quebec
-Rankin Inlet
-Sault Ste. Marie
-Sudbury
-Thunder Bay
-Toronto (x2)
-Vancouver
-Winnipeg
-Yellowknife

USA (15)

-Atlanta
-Boston
-Chicago
-Cincinnati
-Cleveland
-Detroit
-Fort Lauderdale
-Las Vegas
-Minneapolis
-New York
-Newark
-Orlando
-Philadelphia
-Tampa
-Washington

International (15)

-Acapulco
-Cancun
-Cayo Coco
-Glascow
-Holguin
-La Romana
-London (x2)
-Montego Bay
-Paris
-Puerto Vallarta
-Puerto Plata
-Punta Cana
-St. Martin
-Varadero

So there you have it we have 18 destinations inside Canada, 15 in the US and another 15 outside. Notice there are a lot of Charters in the internationnals (only 3 destinations are scheduled) So we lack in that department, we need a Frankfurt, lol

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but the flight can be 3x/week and still be non-stop. Non-stop simply means that it doesn't stop at some intermediate destination.

The Vegas flights are 2x-weekly, not 3x. They will operate Thursday/Sunday.

As already mentioned, 'non-stop' means that a flight operates from A to B without any intermediate stops. This differs from a 'direct' flight which operates from A to B with stop(s) at C (and maybe D, E, etc.) without an aircraft change.

For those interested, traffic at Ottawa is up ... way up.

July was another veyr strong month with about 330,000 pax. This is up more than 10% over last year. The previous few months have seen similar stats. Take a look at the graph and you'll see we have posted impressive gains every month this year.

http://www.ottawa-airport.ca/FlightI...paxchart-e.pdf

At this rate not only will we easily surpass 4 million pax, but we might even break 4.1 million. Here are some potential milestones to monitor:

a) +4 million total pax - should happen this year.
b) +3 million domestic pax - should happen this year.
c) +400,000 pax in a single month - it could happen in March '08.
d) +800,000 transborder pax - might happen this year.
e) +300,000 international pax - might happen this year.
f) +1 million transborder pax - probably will happen around 2010.
