Correct. Phoenix actually does have some of the largest inner city peaks in the country. I hike Piestewa, Shaw, Camelback on a nearly daily basis and I love hiking them. With that being said, I agree with the mentality that we shouldn't build taller buildings because it blocks the view of the mountains. From ground level, you don't see much unless you are close or elevated. Also, IMO skyscrapers against the backdrop of peaks makes for some stunning views and photos. Anyone using this argument to keep us from building taller is full of themselves. You don't move to Central Phoenix for mountain views because you can't see them. If you want to see them, go visit them from outside of your car.

But yea, Combusean was being silly when he posted that.

You cant win, most people in Phoenix are expats from other places and bring their rose-colored glass perceptions of their homelands with them.

They are living through the really the early days of a city and lament that they don't have a mature city already for them like they were used to.

Seattle, and Denver were not what they are today when they originally grew in the 1800's and Phoenix is 100 years younger than them.

Here's an article from today in the Downtown Phoenix Weekly Insider:

THE STEWART HIGH RISE BLENDS OLD AND NEW IN ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THE CIRCLES BUILDING
JANUARY 26, 2018 BY FARA ILLICH

In the course of designing a building, sometimes a bit of opposition yields more thoughtful and interesting results in the long run.

This is true for the Circles building, according to Brian Cassidy, president of CCBG Architects, Inc., the design firm behind The Stewart: https://www.facebook.com/liveatthestewart/ — a new 19-story high rise apartment in Downtown Phoenix.

The project adaptively reuses the showroom of a historic car dealership, the 1947 Stewart Motor Co., adding 312 one- and two-bedroom units in a tower above, and creates a total of 9,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor.

“The shapes are reminiscent of the original building with soft, streamlined, sweeping curves,” Cassidy said. “We’re still playing with the final colors, we won’t know for a few more months, but we hope it will be a lively, interesting building.”

When the Empire Group hired CCBG in 2015 to do a feasibility study on the property at Central Avenue and McKinley Street, the vision of a dense, transit-oriented development started to take shape. But not without some hiccups first.

Is this a second tower crane going up on the south side of the building?

What? I’m not following you here. That skinny thing in the middle? Way to skinny, definitely not a tower crane. Looks like a pull or shaft.

It‘s a construction elevator, used to move materials and construction workers. No second crane needed here. What you‘re seeing in the pic is the railing shaft, which is attached directly to the concrete levels.

This morning's pour completed the 10th floor while the tables on the north half of the 11th floor have already been set. We've officially crossed the halfway point!

I was checking out construction last night. Even though they are only on the 10th floor, they are placing the façade, windows and doors on the levels already built. It's really coming along.

Why does The Stewart's Facebook Page say it's an ice cream shop?

The secret is out. The Stewart is actually going to be the world's largest ice cream shop!

Speaking of ice cream shops, this is slightly off topic but has anyone tried Novel Ice Cream on Grand Avenue? That place is really great. They make donut ice cream sandwiches, waffle ice cream sandwiches, and have some really inventive flavors.

They were delivering a toilet to floor 11 this afternoon and I thought it looked funny.

Novel is the thing dreams are made of.

Also, the owner tries so hard to remember the faces he's seen before but never seems to quite place them right. It's hilarious to me.

Checked out the Stewart last night. This thing is massive. I hadn't realized how long the lot is it's getting built on. It is really going to take up a big chunk of sky in the area. It may not be very tall when completed, but it's currently at 11 floors with still 9 more to go, Stewart is going to be a mammoth of a residential building.

Took a few update pics...

Thanks for the pics!

While I try not to complain about height, I do wish this one had another 5 or so stories to help connect the skyline. I'm not sure it's going to make a big dent as it's still hardly visible from elevated areas.

That being said, it's an amazing project and I think it's going to single-handedly spur taller development in the immediate area. If this wasn't an A+ project, I don't think it would lease quickly and would hurt sentiment. My $ says it fills up fast thanks to the quality design/build + rooftop pool. TBD...
