If I'm at any mall and have to pass through a Sears to get to my car, I tend to hurry through lest people think I actually shop there.

haha I have a pretty funny story on that subject. While walking through the Sears at the Eaton Centre here in Toronto on my way back from work I was stopped not once but twice by customers asking me questions, mistaking me for a sears employee.

Needless to say I haven't worn that suit since.

That happens more than you think - anyone not wearing a coat is generally targetted by customers at either The Bay or Sears - do you work here?

Well a small tip from experience. Never wear a blue vest in a Walmart. You get badgered like crazy even if the blue vest looks nothing like the iconic Walmart one.

On Boxing Day.

Apparently there is a chance that the redevelopment of the SE corner of Pender and Thurlow may occur sooner than later...might be mixed use, and could be tall. The view cone there is 430 ft, but is in a view shadow which would allow something closer to 600 ft...

Interesting, wonder if they are eyeing retail/hotel for their mixed use or if they acutally intend to put residential in there. They would most likely have to go higher then 430ft to make it currently viable in either case.

Thanks! Gotta love those "view shadows" (helps that the site is also "downhill") - must be in the shadow of the Hyatt Regency.

I can see developers out with their maps looking for sites in the shadow of Scotia Tower, Royal Centre and the Bentall Centre towers.

But what building is causing a 600ft view shadow in this viewcone? Something in Yaletown?

It would have to be a pre-view cone tower - my guess is Hyatt Regency and Hotel Vancouver both of which are on higher ground, which would allow some extra height (not sure about going to 600ft though (maybe a spire lined up with the Hotel Vancouver's chimney?)).

Site is in light green, Hyatt and Hotel Vancouver circled in dark green. Ignore the purple oval.

I think this is the view cone in question - View Cone C-2.2:

The Hyatt and Hotel Vancouver were the first buildings I considered, but at 109 and 110 metres, respectively, neither of them seem remotely tall enough to allow for a 600ft view shadow at the corner of Pender and Thurlow, notwithstanding its lower elevation. The Hyatt is generally in compliance with the viewcone and the Hotel Vancouver exceeds it by only about 30 feet.

I'm not sure if 600 feet is even possible on that site. My source implied that it would be closer to the height limit (600 ft) than the view cone (430 ft), so maybe low 500's? All of this is contingent on doing office + residential or hotel, and from what I know, residential isn't permitted there...still very preliminary.

I love the Best Buy gag from improv everywhere. I see they've 'remixed' the video. Lotsa fun.

They're most famous for the "Frozen Grand Central" gag

Other proposed downtown office buildings awaiting approval on their rezoning applications include Burrard Gateway, The Exchange, and Manulife’s building.

Has anyone heard of this? Is this just a different name for something we have alread heard about?

Manulife's building is the one at Nelson & Howe.

I hear Van City Council is moving forward with a big change to NEFC. The viaducts may not stick around.

I'm hoping you're wrong about that, but knowing this council, you're probably right.
