CBC passes CKNW to lead Vancouver radio ratings

CBU, the CBC’s AM radio station, was the top-rated Vancouver station in the first quarter of 2009, passing perennial leader CKNW, according to the Bureau of Broadcast Measurement’s latest survey, released Thursday.

CBU led all stations with an 11.0 share of listeners aged 12 and older, up 1.1 from the fourth quarter of 2008. This was almost a full point ahead of CKNW, which was second with a 10.1 share, down from the 12.4 share it enjoyed in the previous quarter.

QMFM was third at 8.8, followed by CFBT (The Beat 94.5 FM) at 7.6, and CBU FM (CBC 2) and CKWX (News1130), tied for fifth at 6.8.

One-time leader CKLG (Jack FM) was ninth in the ratings with a 6.1 share, down 0.2 from the fourth quarter.

No surprise that CKNW is experiencing a drop in listeners; Rafe Mair is now on CBC and the amount of commercials has reached ridiculous levels.

CBC radio one has engaging programming with a big slant to local arts and culture. The have a lot of articles especially on the local food scene.

Don't get me started on rafe mair. He's an angry, bitter old man that wishes BC was exactly as it was in 1978. He also is careless and sloppy with his analyses. Rafe Mair only has a small role as a comentator on their political panel, yet he still comes across as he's the king of all media...
