There are only two taller towers facing the Nepean side of the site, but there is also a shorter & wider third building (I believe 6 stories, so tall enough, but not a "tower" when seen next to the two 20+ towers) that fronts along Lisgar.

And a row of towns, which you can sort of see in the planning report: http://ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/cit...alfe%20St..htm

They still seem to be slowly scraping and chipping away at the shale in the bottom of the hole.

Yikes - how long have they been digging? It's been a year plus, right?

Here I am thinking that they'll be chipping away forever at the huge hole until the bottom is levelled out, but I was wrong. Walking back to Place Bell from a nearby coffee shop, I saw them laying down large strips of a plastic protective layer (?) on the (slanted) east end of the hole.

Actually this likely means they're not done yet. Based on your description, it sounds like they're laying down blasting mats. These are placed above rock that is being blasted away to prevent debris from shooting all over the place.

Alternatively, you may have seen them laying geotextile, which would mean they are through digging.

It's a wonderful hole! Been so much fun to watch them dig it.

I wish they'd let people rock-hunt in the pit before they start manscaping it, though.

It's geotextile. Had to look that up.

They hung a giant roll of it from an excavator and unrolled a few rows of it over the rock and concrete patches (they poured some in last week to fill in uneven areas).

I was chatting with someone that knows the site super over at Tribeca and he was telling me they need to pour a single four foot thick slab all in one shot to withstand the hydrostatic pressure. There's a name for that kind of base slab but I forget what it's called. It would be really interesting to see how they lay four feet of concrete horizontally.

I think they started shortly after Soho Lisgar was released, which was spring/summer last year. So they've been at it for at least a year.

The project is funded by Claridge themselves, so there was no sales quota to meet prior to construction starting, which is unusual for a project as large as this one. But it enabled Claridge to start sooner and increase sales momentum and should have enabled them to complete the project faster - the latter seems to be a moot point at this stage.
