Interesting. So, according to that angle, there are clearly three more floors plus the mechanical penthouse to go. Cool!

Too bad the glass sucks so bad.

Here's a good shot of the cantilever; the clerestory windows do not close the entire gap.

Also my rooftop pic from the Metropolitan towers.

From CKNW:

Falling debris at Vancouver building
VANCOUVER/CKNW (AM980)
Jordan Armstrong | Email news tips to jarmstrong@cknw.com
9/20/2012

People living near a high-rise construction site in downtown Vancouver are concerned about falling debris.

This morning, a huge piece of glass fell from the 'Mark' tower at Pacific and Seymour and landed on a car.

Area resident Amanda Bates fears it's only a matter of time before someone's hurt or killed.

"It's a window, you can see from the frame on the pictures -- the window frame has just fallen onto this car. We've had metal studs landing in our sandy volleyball court in the building, we have garbage coming down all the time. There was also a nail that came down at one point and did actually hit somebody in the courtyard the other day -- luckily, they weren't badly hurt."

She says security guards in her building are telling residents not to let their kids play in the courtyard next to the construction site.

"Just in case this kind of thing happens again. We are on the lookout for things like this."

Onni Group is the developer of the tower.

CKNW has called them and we're waiting for a response.

Worksafe BC's Donna Freeman says they're investigating this morning's incident.

"It appears, based on the information we have so far, is that two workers were putting into place, positioning a large piece of glass at the 36th floor, I believe. Something happened with the suction cup -- again this is preliminary information -- but in any event, the glass did fall about 36 stories. This is a 200 pound piece of glass and it's approximately 4-by-8 in diameter."

No injuries reported.

You know she never took the time to actually "think" about her fears with a statement like that...

How would a nail badly hurt someone unless it was like a railways stud? Falling objects have such a thing as terminal velocity, a falling nail would at worst puncture the top layer of your skin and offer everyone around a good laugh.

Having said that a 200lb piece of glass would kill you on the spot...No one would be laughing in that case.

A nail, even a small one, is fairly aerodynamic. Even if they are light, the mass vs. drag could allow it to gain enough speed to cause severe puncture injuries, even then it'd have to impact right. The probability is low, but the risk is there. It's kind of like a bullet, even when it is beyond it's max effective range, well below the sound barrier, losing it's stability and starting to tumble, that 5 gram piece of copper and lead still has potential to cause life threatening or life ending injuries.

From a vantage point on Cambie/Broadway, the crane for this tower appears to be the tallest structure downtown. So I'm assuming the roof of this tower will *appear* to be above the roof of Shangri-La to most vantage points sount of downtown.

Will this mean the general public will assume this is "the new tallest building" downtown? I wonder.

I love vanman's shot above. Best angle of this building IMO. Here are few shots from week ago.

Those panoramas don't do complete justice to this building. It looks taller from the citybound side of the bridge, but I was too lazy to get there.

I love how Yaletown looks like from Cambie Bridge.
