Is there any reason why Tokyo can't build real super-talls rather than TV towers?

Tokyo is a kingdom. Places like Shanghai, with all their supertalls and hype, still have a long way to go to catch up to Tokyo as a city.

no but theres different engineering, consider the way wind affects a building rather than a freestanding concrete tower. HVAC,plumbing, electrical, floors etc. all must be considered. its simply an easier form of engineering when all that space wont be occupied by tenants.

Tokyo also has to worry about typhoons. You can build super strong, rigid towers, like the WTC 1 in New York that hold up well to hurricane force winds, but they're not good for extreme earthquakes. Taipei and Shanghai will probably never see an 8.0 quake. Tokyo needs to worry about 9.0.

It freaks me out just thinking about a 8.0 or 9.0 in Shanghai.

They built some of the taller buildings in Shanghai to resist earthquakes of this magnitude, but hey. Anything can happen.

Well, the tower passed it's first big test, the giant earthquake in March, well. It's always nice to see buildings withstand a crysis

Disappointed in this one. To me, it lacks any sort of grace or elegance. Very clunky; looks as if it was designed by someone who didn't have a great sense of proportions.
