As I choose to take video of the fireworks instead of pictures, here are some of the fireworks from the Sydney Morning Herald.

Nice to see street pics of Sydney instead of the usual skyline shots. I have to say that I find the scale and proportions at street level really strange. Sydney has this scaled down built form rather than that monolithic north American quality. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Some great looking buildings and street scenes!

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments.
I today took some more pictures, here is North Sydney, essentially Sydney's second downtown, on the northern side of the Harbour just over the Harbour Bridge. It is a centre of high tech industry, with offices for Cisco, IBM and others.

Here's the Warringah Freeway, takes you over the Bridge into the city, North Sydney is besides it:

North Sydney Streets:

The North Sydney war memorial, it reads 'Greater love hath no man than this that he give life for the life of his country. Lest we forget.'

You asked for it. Surrey Hills. I think a San Franciscian would like this!

A greek orthodox church:

Terrace housing, which dominates this inner-city suburb.

Ohh yes, New South Wales elections on March 26th. I still don't know who to vote for, they all suck, though Clover Moore will probably win as Mayor again, the women at the top:

Took the train today.
Now, Australians love the suburbs, and the majority of people live in them. And Sydney is the business centre of the country with a large and dense downtown. This presents a bit of a problem for mass transit, a metro around the downtown would not be that useful to the majority of people.
So the city has something that is a cross between a suburban rail network and a subway, to both serve the city and the sprawling suburbs. The section going through the downtown is underground with stations that look just like subway station and were built in the 1920s and 30s, but are serving double decker suburban trains. It is called the City Circle.
Cityrail has 2060km of track, 307 stations and serves 1 million people a day. This is one of the largest and most complex rail systems in the world.
Here's some of the rolling stock:

Cityrail has been trying something new at Town Hall Station, water sprays on the fans to keep commuters cool in the Aussie summer.

On board the train:

Fortunately you aren't standing for too long, as the train starts to empty as soon as it gets into the inner-suburbs.
Those are the two busiest stations in the network, and were built in 1932.

Museum station from 1926, preserved in it's original form, has a delightful London style.

On, King Street. This one reads, 'Behold, the dreamer cometh. Come now therefore, and let us slay him... And we shall see what will become of his dreams'
With the aboriginal flag.
