This is the answer I was expecting. You forgot the "elephant in the room" teams: Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers and Knicks. I would include the Islanders since I do know many Islander fans upstate but they are more or less region specific, like the Sabres. The Sabres represent Western NY and the Islanders Long Island.

My question is why doesnt anyone ever include NEW YORK teams?

NY teams DO represent NYS. Cities like Albany and Utica are closer to NYC than they are to Buffalo and especially Toronto.

Buffalo only represents Western NY. I wish people would start realizing that.

As for saying the Boston Red Sox, over the Yankees and Mets?????????? I dont get it.

We here in Upstate NY get YES Network and SNY, not NESN. While there is a fair contingent of Red Sox fans, to not assume the Yankees and Mets are #1 is ridiculous.

Simply put, as someone who lives in Upstate NY, I dont understand this fairly common misconception about pro sports in Upstate NY. Nobody thinks New York teams are at all a presence? let alone the majority? Its quite shocking.

People actually think the Red Sox are a majority over the Yankees and Mets in Upstate NY?

Also, no NBA team?

the Knicks and Nets are both on MSG and YES respectively in Upstate NY.

I just cant fathom the logic into outsiders thinking Upstate NY doesnt have an NBA team. Just because the Knicks play in our largest city doesnt mean they dont represent the state either.

Heres the MLB Blackout Map.

Upstate NY is sky blue and sky blue is not Red Sox. So Evergrey, why is your answer Red Sox?

Buffalo and WNY is Yankees/Mets/Indians/Pirates and it appears you mistake that for the rest of the entire state. The Blue Jays arent included but they have a large fanbase in WNY.

Buffalo = Western NY.

It was more or less to gauge outside opinions.

Upstate NY teams are first and foremost NY teams is the point.

Buffalo represents Western NY, not Upstate, and the only Boston team in all of Upstate NY with a decent number of fans are Red Sox fans but thats it.

Or take a city like Albany for example. You think Albany's NHL team is the Buffalo Sabres when the Rangers are 2 hours closer? Same goes for Utica. People in both cities got uber pissed that now since the Sabres are on MSG they get priority over the Rangers in home and home conflict. Theres even a petition.

MLB: yankees (central and eastern NY), mets (CNY and capital district), red sox (capital district) and blue jays (western NY).

NFL: bills (central and western NY), giants (rest of upstate) and jets (rest of upstate). the steelers have a loyal following as well in southern tier and parts of CNY.

NBA: the knicks (most of upstate) and raptors (western NY). dont really know about the nets. not very big though.

NHL: sabres (western NY) and the rangers (rest of upstate). lot of hab's fans in upstate (montreal is close). the bruins, NJ devils and NY islanders also have a minor following.

correct.

although central is between giants and bills. the giants sponsorship actually runs through the mohawk valley including utica, lots of promotions/sponsorship, etc. also see alot more for the jets as well. the part of central the bills are in central ny is syracuse. utica is the only upstate city where the majority of teams are yankees, giants, rangers and knicks, and the rest of the cities arent completely all ny team majorities. albany for example has a huge boston contingent, and western ny is buffalo and toronto influenced. devils have the second largest following in utica and albany since their AHL affiliate presence has been around for well over 10 years. you wouldnt think so because its nj but there are ALOT of nj fans on the eastern side of the state.

also, quite a bit of pittsburgh and philadelphia fans, more specifically steelers, as you said, penguins, eagles and flyers.

giants are big in utica and albany because training camp is in albany.

Yeah... it's pretty obvious that Buffalo is WNY. I only mentioned Buffalo having Yankees fans as a further reinforcement of your point. Get it?

And, no, I don't think that Albany's NHL team is the Buffalo Sabres rather than the Rangers... nor do I and probably 99% of the US and Canadian populations care where Albany's NHL allegiance lies, nor has that fact actually ever even crossed my mind.

Youd actually be amazed at the numbers of people that do.

As of 2006, the Buffalo Sabres get priority over both the Rangers and Devils on MSG in Albany. A team 2 hours further. Thanks NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, you fucking moron.

Its actually a big TV mess right now for sports fans in these areas.

sporting goods stores are indicative as to what the primary fan base is. in utica, the stores are stocked with giants, bills and jets clothing evenly during football season. plus some of whoever is doing well nearby so a lot of people riding the steelers and patriots bandwagon lately.

I know the main news services in Ithaca cover all all the New York city teams as well as the Buffalo teams. There's a large contingient of college students from the metro New York area, and Buffalo is often the team for many of the locals.
