In Germany maybe, but here? I know that's how it 'should' be pronounced (not sure about the bawk though), but that would be like pronouncing "Granbee" in Québec while everybody pronounces it "Granbay".

Yeah. As I mentioned, if I had no prior knowledge of the place and came across a sign that said "Steinbach", I'd say it "shteyn-bawk" or "shteyn-bock".

When in doubt I always go for the assumed original pronunciation of the names of places and people.

If your last name ends in -icki I will pronounce it "itskee" unless you tell me otherwise. If it's a name from the former Yugoslavia and ends with a C I will pronounce it with a sound somewhere between an "its" and an "itch". If your name sounds Italian and contains a "ch" I will pronounce it with a "k" sound unless you correct me.

If I walked into Ottawa for the first time today and saw the name "New Edinburgh" I'd say "edinburrah". (Of course, living in the area I know it's "edinburg" and that's what I use.

Isn't Steinbach's main claim to fame that it has drawn in disproportionate numbers of Latin American immigrants to work at a local meat packing plant, which has helped the place to thrive, or am I confusing it with another town?

I would say what Steinbach is most well known for is the Mennonite Heritage Village.

http://mennoniteheritagevillage.com/

Hitch your horses and pack your luggage for a harrowing tale of migration and settlement at the Mennonite Heritage Village. Travel through time to a turn-of-the century Russian Mennonite street village on our 40 acre site, taste traditional Mennonite fare at the museum’s Livery Barn Restaurant, and explore a classic Mennonite housebarn and a fully operational Dutch windmill during our summer season. View historic and heirloom treasures from Poland and Russia to Canada, displayed in the permanent and Gerhard Ens galleries, and find that perfect souvenir at Village Books and Gifts, all open year-round in the Village Centre.

There is always something new to experience. With changing annual themes and temporary exhibits celebrating the Mennonite heritage and culture, new artifacts donated each year, and a broad range of activities and demonstrations, from wagon rides to bread baking, throughout the summer on our Festival days, this bustling village offers fresh experiences with each visit.

When I think of Steinbach, the following all comes to mind:

-German
-Heritage Village
-Biovail
-The unaccountably rich and large Steinbach Credit Union
-Car dealerships
-Vic Toews
-MENNONITES

One would explain the other, no?

I wonder how Steinbach traditional Mennonite fare compares to Waterloo County traditional Mennonite fare? A battle of the schmeckys!

So next poll will be "which city will reach 100,000 first, Okotoks or Steinbach"?

You can be 100% sure that the ancestors of all those people said "shteyn-bawk"!

It's 'edinburrah' and anyone saying differently is simply mispronouncing it (just like anyone saying 'New Yak' or whatever).

I always thought Quebec City would reach a million first simply through growth in the region eventually leading to expansion of the commutershed.

Hamilton seems like it should already be at a million given its proximity to T.O. but we've been saying that for years. At the very least, we'd expect a lot more spillover but it's possible that right now that's the only thing keeping it growing at all. Unfortunately, as our cities finally start to look inwards for growth, it's unlikely that Toronto's sprawl will ever include the Hamilton region...if that trend continues (and it probably will) That means it's unlikely Hamilton can expect any spillover growth from T.O.

Winnipeg is the dark horse here or at least it was. When I was a kid in the 80's and 90's I never realized that Winnipeg was such a slow growth place. Then, when I did, everything got turned around. Now Winnipeg is probably the most likely to reach a million first at an accelerating pace...what a turnaround.

Honestly, it's a tough race to call. I still say QC first but not through direct growth.

I gotta say, I was very surprised to see this building the first time I rolled through Steinbach a year or two ago. It feels even bigger in person as it just completely overwhelms the other buildings around it.

I'd agree but the rule of thumb is that local custom carries the day, and in Ottawa that definitely means "new edinburg"... unfortunately.

Someone mentioned that Delhi, Ontario is pronounced "Dell high" and that cracks me up whenever I think of it. I'd have a hard time with that local pronunciation.

Same with Montevideo, Minnesota... "Monty video". Yeesh.

I was going to note Delhi, ON in support of Acajack's last post. Examples abound.

I voted for Quebec City for that very reason.

Quebec will reach a million just through gradual expansion of the CMA boundaries. Hamilton doesn't have this luxury, and there is nothing outside Winnipeg's CMA watershed to add..........

I remember a few years ago somebody said Caledonia was only a handful of commuters shy of being included in the Hamilton CMA, which would add 30 - 35k to the total. It was assumed this would happen after the next census. Now that that time has passed, did that in fact happen?
