FedEx Investing $1 Billion in Memphis Hub Modernization
By Bill Dries/ Memphis Daily News

Quote:
The announcement on the tarmac at Signature Air with the FedEx Super Hub in the background follows a January announcement by the company of a larger overall package of $3.2 billion in expansions, pay hikes, bonuses and pension fund expansion as a result of federal tax reform. The Memphis hub expansion is the second $1 billion or greater capital expansion in the city following the announcement of the expansion of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital last year.

Affordable apartments to be built near FedEx Forum
MICHAEL WADDELL |High Ground News

Quote:
Affordable apartments are on the way to the South City area as general contractor and multifamily specialist Patton & Taylor Construction Co. is preparing to begin construction on Forum Flats, a collection of 205 units at the corner of Danny Thomas Boulevard and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard near the FedEx Forum... Nearby, across the street, the historic Universal Life office building is being renovated, and the $250 million affordable housing initiative dubbed South City is going up to the south at 521 Vance Park Place. That redevelopment of Foote Homes, the city's last public housing project, will transform an aging 420-unit set of buildings with a new complex of 712 mixed-income apartments.

Exclusive: Investor plans $39M redevelopment of Downtown building into apartments
Jacob Steimer/ Memphis Business Journal/ April 5, 2018

"The 227,000-square-foot office building at 300 Court Ave. stands vacant, recently emptied by First Horizon National Corp.

For the 46-year-old building, the loss of the bank as its tenant could easily have meant the beginning of a slow decay. Instead, though, the building appears destined for a $39 million redevelopment into apartments, courtesy of Californian Robert Goldman. "

The Binghampton revival continues (with rendering).

400 apartments and sprawling retail to replace empty warehouse on Broad Avenue
MICHAEL WADDELL/ High Ground News

Quote:
The warehouse on the northwest corner of Broad Avenue and Bingham Street, which Loeb has owned since the mid-1990s, will be torn down to make way for the redevelopment. Plans call for approximately 400 apartments, 10,000 to 15,000 square feet of commercial retail space and roughly 450 parking spaces. The iconic water tower will remain.

This only reinforces my view that the north end of Mud Island needs one of these and a wheel, a coaster and a handful of other rides like Tivoli Park in Copenhagen

Man on man the thrill of spinning around with the views of the bridges, the River and the Skyline. I would certainly go for a more muted lighting effect imagine paired with the bridge.

Developer plans to build Downtown Memphis grocery by 2018's end
By Jacob Steimer / Memphis Business Journal

"Archer is currently reaching out to grocery companies to try to land a tenant for the 136 Webster Ave. building. If none of the chains are interested, though, he said he'd open one himself.

"If no one is going to bite the bait, it wouldn’t be hard for me to start small and build to the need," Archer said. "I can see hundreds of apartments from the front porch of that building."

Quote:

That is phenomenal news indeed! So happy to hear it. Memphis is a remarkable city at street level... but it's a little depressing looking up at night and seeing some of it's tallest towers completely dark, so I'm thrilled to hear this news. Now, if we could just find a taker for the Sterrick!

Looks like more info has come out:

UPDATE: Convention Center Hotel Footprint Bigger Than 100 North Main
By Bill Dries/Memphis Daily News Updated 11:21AM

https://www.memphisdailynews.com/new...00-north-main/

"THM Memphis Acquisitions LLC, the New York City-based developer of the project added more detail to the plan Friday, May 11. The new details come the day after THM and Loews Hotel Holding Corp. signed a letter of intent with the city of Memphis and the Downtown Memphis Commission toward a binding contract all sides hope to have done by the end of this year.

The New York City-based developer also has the vacant Jefferson Plaza building on the southeast corner of Second Street and Jefferson under contract for $4 million. The contract includes the open land next to the south side of the Jefferson Plaza building where a parking garage once stood and before that the Irving Block Prison on the Civil War era.

THM executive co chair Arlene Maidman said in a written statement the company “intends to re-develop the three contiguous acres as a single mixed-used project, consisting of more than 2 million square feet of hospitality, extended stay, retail, residential, commercial and parking uses.”

"In addition to the 100 North Main Building, the development would include two 30-story office towers of more than 500,000 square feet and a 467,000 square foot parking garage for more than 1,200 cars. THM has spent $12 million to date on acquiring the property next to the south side of 100 North Main up to Jefferson Avenue."

I'm kinda skeptical about whether or not this development can actually get off the ground, especially with how the One Beale development is taking forever to actually happen over on the southern end of downtown. I'm not sold on the twin office tower portion of those plans unless they know more about the market than we do and have some actual tenants lined up.

Yeah, for sure. That's a lot of spec office space for a market like this. If just the hotel portion comes about that's huge for downtown by itself. I'm hopeful though since this seems to be moving in the right direction at least.

Nucor Plans $240M Steel Expansion in Arkansas
– The Associated Press

Quote:
Arkansas Business reports that Nucor Corp. recently announced the galvanizing line for the company's plant in Hickman, about 80 miles north of Memphis. The line is expected to operate by 2021 with capacity to produce half a million tons of steel sheet metal annually. The company hasn't given details on potential jobs accompanying the new line. But Arkansas Economic Development Commission spokeswoman Brandi Hinkle expects about 100 new positions.

This is expansion #2 announced for Nucor up there.

This along with Big River in Oceola is making Mississippi Co a steel powerhouse.

Convention Center Overhaul and Renovation to be Rebid

I Give Up!

https://www.memphisdailynews.com/new...n-to-be-rebid/

Quote:
The city will be rebidding the $175 million renovation of the Memphis Cook Convention Center, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said Tuesday, May 15.“We can only spend what we got. So we are going to rebid it and see where we go from there,” Strickland said when asked when renovations at the convention center would begin. “Unfortunately it’s going to be delayed several months because of that.”
This and the airport have just been getting pushed back every single year.

IMO this will always and forever be our convention center.

I feel like if they were to just allow the cc to be completely closed, it may cut a bit of cost.
