Is that a joke?

"Lions" as in "mountain lion," otherwise known as a "cougar," a large predatory cat native to British Columbia.

An image of a mountain lion is part of the BC Lions logo and appears on all team merchandise and marketing.

I always attributed the Lions name to the Lions Gate bridge

Or, the mountain.

Which, I'd assume the bridge is named after

So, in conclusion... I believe they are named after the Lions peaks!

I say we call them the Vancouver Canucks, then normal people would have a chance of getting Canuck tickets.
The basketball team would benefit from people buying the wrong tickets and the organization could save money by having Fin as their mascot.

the lions - with how insipid professional sports team names are in north america, i doubt very much that the mountain lions of north vancouver have anything to do with the bc team name.

Well, according to Wikipedia, the BC Lions are named after the twin peaks of the North Shore Mountains after all. However, the team logo is, and has always been, the cougar, i.e., the mountain lion. Here is the team's website: http://bclions.com/

So, go figure.

It sounded ridiculous in my head to start but I could see it work with the right marketing and branding. Their primary jersey colour could of course be sea foam green.

The Vancouver Specials? And the mascot could be a two-story house with the basement rented out to another mascot. Or maybe we could just borrow a mascot from VANOC. How about the Vancouver Quatchis?

That said, I'm a huge basketball fan and would love for the NBA to return. I doubt that anything of this sort will happen until after the new labour agreement with the players' union is resolved in 2011 though.
