I can't help but wonder if all these suppositions about light rail, transfer points, bus feeder routes etc etc isn't all for naught.
It's not now so much about "if" driver-less cars happen, but now it's about when. With actual working models in existence, the future isn't really that far off.
I would think companies like Uber, already testing driver-less cars, would be the first to implement them. These new cars don't have to have much in the form of luxury. Climate control and something relatively comfortable to sit on. Bare-bones enough to hose out for cleaning purposes.
People might still choose to buy their own vehicle, but many more, especially younger people, would be more inclined to use a robot car. Pick them up in the am, drop them off at work (maybe pick up a coworker along the way?), the car then drives off to run in operation 24/7.
At the end of the day, people will always want to start and end their journeys with the least amount of hassle. Especially the hassles that come with delayed trains/buses, over-crowding, transfer points exposed to the elements etc etc etc.
