Eh! Panini closes

Eh! Panini closed last week. From their FB post:

"Dearest friends, fans and famiglia,

Eh! Panini will be serving our last meal as of today, August 14, 2015. It has been an absolute pleasure to serve you traditional Italian cooking and the tastiest veal sandwich in the Golden Horseshoe but we have been given an incredible offer that we absolutely can’t pass up.

We would like to thank every single customer that supported our business and look forward to watching the King William neighbourhood continue to flourish.

Thank you and see you soon Hamilton!"

Panaderya Bakeshop on James / Colbourne had a bailiff's notice posted today. It looks bad - likely they're done for good. Although I didn't really go there it's sad news.

That, combined with the "see you soon, Hamilton" makes me think they're locating to a more upscale location (which is weird, cause King William is the up and coming neighborhood downtown).

That's a shame. I got my mom a birthday cake there. It was really good.

A very good bake shop, which we went to several times. The hot food was very good.

But I'm not surprised that it didn't survive: not highly visible from James N; not enough density in the neighbourhood to keep it economically viable; not enough marketing to make it a "destination" shop.

Maybe I'm just too negative, but all too often James N seems to be empty of people and I wonder how the shops survive at all. Thoughts?

Well they had tons of parking...

I think visibility from the street is paramount. It's free 24/7 advertising. Being in a strip mall works for all kinds of stores but I guess depends on a big turnover in vehicle traffic from the other stores. Here there was only the bank and the temp agency office.

There was also competition from the established Ola Bakery. Having been there for a long time and owning the building with the apartments above their overhead costs are so much lower than a new startup paying premium rent in a renovated building.

Weird. They weren't even open that long. I always thought it a bit weird a panani place went to the effort of getting a liquor license.

Lake Road and The Mule are opening this weekend. The Mule's taco prices are thankfully reasonable so I'll be happy to give them my business over Mezcal's $6 taco insanity.

How much are the Mule's tacos? Given the recent appalling trend towards expensive small tacos $6 even looks good. Then again they're probably bite size.

Lake Road opened really really quick. I guess they didn't have much to do in there.

Euro Pizza at James and Colbourne has reopened as Knead Pizza. It's run by Shane who owns the Salt Lick Smokehouse.

That's actually pretty big news for the eatery scene on James. Euro was there for so long and the owners tried to sell a couple of times, afaik.

So much food news lately it's crazy.

Born And Raised is opening at 224 James St North (Classic Cafe Building)
http://bornandraised.restaurant/

Golden Brown is opening at Barton just east of James next to HAVN. Not sure what it'll be exactly...misc. baked goods and preserves maybe?
