Unless they don't have any other alternative, they seem to provide service to the cheapest options in the area similar to the low cost airlines in Europe servicing Stansted, Beauvais, etc. I am expecting them to provide service to St.Hubert instead of YUL once their expansions plans to accommodate larger aircrafts are complete.

Even with Swoop now launched and Flair's recent expansion, no ULCC service at all to Montreal or Ottawa.

For a long time many of the LCC's in Europe were notorious for marketing an airport as being in a certain city, when in fact often they were well over and hour's drive away.
One of the worst cases I recall was Ryanair marketing Malmö in Sweden as Denmark's Copenhagen. Although not horrendously far in distance, it wasn't even in the same country! It caused several issues for visitors that required visas that weren't aware they weren't actually flying into Denmark.

YUL April 2018 numbers.

Total passengers: 1,482,221 +2.3% (April 2017 was up 17% over April 2016)
Domestic: 537,541 +1.1% (+12% last year)
International: 575,898 +1.8% (+25% last year)
Transborder: 368,782 +4.8% (+11.8% last year)

So a modest increase compared to last year, but accounting for last years' tremendous growth in April, the 2 year growth average isn't too bad.

Easter traffic was during March, plus the shitty weather we had in April (freezing rain, canceled flights) can help partly explain the weak numbers.

funny guy, but its true... weather was terrible in Montreal for almost the entire month of April.


New routes beginning this month and next... so summer months will be great for pax traffic. we shall see.

Massive no, but enough to make a dent on the pax numbers. Toronto got some nasty weather as well. Will be interesting to see the GTAA's stats.

Air France was also on strike for almost a week, we didn't have any flights to CDG. So that is double 77W service lost.

StatsCan published its annual stats for aircraft movements this past week.

2017 annual aircraft movements for airports with a control tower

2017 annual aircraft movements for airports with FSS (flight service stations). Of note, YMX handled over 53,000 movements. 2nd busiest FSS in the country, after Red Deer, Alberta. NavCan is conducting an aeronautical review to determine if a control tower should be reopened, on account of the volume and mix of traffic YMX sees.

As mentioned a few weeks ago (from my compilation of the monthly data that was released), YUL regained 3rd spot in terms of movements in 2017. First time since 1989.

CAAC will ease "one route, one airline" policy for Chinese carriers, starting Oct 1, 2018. Still a lot of restrictions in place for Category II intl long haul routes, which Canada is part of.

Based on the details being discussed over on airliners, the new policy is still heavily skewed in CA's favor.

Unless the Canada-China bilateral is renegotiated, which I don't see happening, especially if the Conservatives return to power next year, Chinese carriers will still be maxed out and won't be able to take advantage of this new ruling.
