That was five years ago and I don't think anything has really changed since then. If it were that easy for the city council to grant a variance, we wouldn't have our current problem of the Waller Creek Tunnel Intake Facility being too high. The city council would have just granted an exception.
In my previous comment, I already understood that the city cannot change the state CVCs. Once upon a time (from what I remember...maybe I was mistaken...it was a long time ago), the city also once maintained it's own set of CVCs that weren't exactly in line with the state CVCs. I vaguely remember the city wanting to modify it's CVCs so that they would line up with the state CVCs.

A second medical center crane permit filing from today says the crane for the Beck building is going up on 11/18 and will be 160' tall.

I fixed the link. Beck is the builder and it's the six story building being built next to the Erwin Center on the south side:

Major expansion underway

Ascension Seton announces $280M expansion of Dell Seton Medical Center at UT

4 additional floors will be added on top the existing one.

April 10th 2023

AUSTIN, Texas — Ascension Seton announced on Monday it's investing $280 million to expand Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas to meet the needs of the increasing population of Central Texas.

The construction of the upgrade will begin this summer.

The expansion will add 150 beds and more than 160,000 square feet that include surgical, clinical, and outpatient space, a Neurosciences Center of Excellence, and additional ICU space. Other additions include a third level on the building facing Red River Street and four new stories built atop the existing patient tower.

“The original intent of the hospital built in 2017 was always that it would need to expand on its footprint even then, and so this is a good time for us to expand,” said Messer.

I think the helipad is on the lower roof. How many more floors are they adding again?

Edit: 4 floors
