I'm looking out today from floor 38 of Marina City's West tower and there's a lot of activity going on. There is maybe 15 workers up there and they are seem to be inspecting things and moving items around. So far they've lifted a large generator, concrete skip as well as a large tool box and many wood crates.

Any idea what is going on? Could they be removing the crane? Last I heard is that Teng is still trying to sell and pretend like this whole project never happened...

yeah, no kidding.

"we've had 18 months to dismantle this dormant crane, but we though it'd be more fun to do it with 10 below zero windchills."

Thanks Harry. . . did anyone else notice - perhaps it was already mentioned - that the tower crane has been lowered and it appears as though they're going to dismantle it after this slab is poured? Sorry if it's been discussed already. . .

crane is coming down

Adjustable is pouring some additional structure to support the derrick that will be used to dismantle the crane.

^ well, that took a long time, but at least we can now officially move this one to "never built". now that the crane is coming down, there's no hope at all that this is just in some sort of "on hold" limbo anymore. a sad day, but one we all knew was coming.

cest la vie.

Novice question, but if this is "never built" then what does that mean becomes of what is already there? Seems there are three options....1) something will be built, 2) It is done and this is what we get, or 3) it will be torn down (I assume not).

Thanks

My hunch is that the existing structure on site will eventually be incorporated into a new project, but that might be years down the road from now.

Maybe it can be changed to "20-story parking garage - topped out."

How can the city allow this eyesore to remain unfinished for "years"?

Well, I hope this means we (as citizens of Chicago) can get our fucking sidewalk back now.

Just a thought. The tidying up of the tower and lowering of the crane may be a signal that this thing is about to go into someone else's hands. The new owner isn't going to go through a purchase with a bunch of equipment on site that doesn't belong to them.

How can the city do anything about it? It sucks, everyone knows it sucks, Teng took a big gamble and lost. If it'd paid off they'd look like geniuses. We can float hopeful ideas all day, but the reality is that we're looking at a chunk of a structure that likely never will be built as it was originally planned. Just figuring out what to do with the site probably will take years.

(the preceding is mostly my opinion, I make no claims to superior or insider knowledge)

There’s nothing that can be done but hope that a different developer in different times will pick this up and turn it into something. It’s a shame, but it looks like this thing is here to stay for a while. Lesson learned perhaps?

It’s sad, but this is a prime example of a real estate roll of the dice gone bad.

The original thread was closed, but I wanted to share new information.

Teng & Associates has been sold to Trow Global.

How this relates to Waterview is not yet seen.
