new york wins for me, has a couple of good skylines, the water vantage point, depth rather than just a thin sliver, and a good architectural mix.

hk looks amazing with the lights, water and amazing topography, but for me the lack of historic buildings lets it down - too many of the modern blocks are boring, while one or two talls are a bit tacky. i also think it was better when centered around the bank of china building - the IFC makes the skyline look unbalanced.

Chicago's skyline is a bit disappointing for some reason, cant put my finger on it.

shanghai's skyline is a definite notch below - the best skyline there is on the bund side, which doesn't have the tallest buildings behind it. pudong looks tacky and a bit patchy. elsewhere there's miles of awful high-rises which, while making for impressive density, looks quite ugly. it's bit of a sao paulo syndrome.

Chicago and New York are the best skylines on earth.

Nothing else even comes close.

Hey guys I put a new city for #5, check it out!

That was the best pano I could get of the city that wasn't too large.

If you can find one that is better but, is NOT any larger than 1024 x 200, please post it, thanks!

It's rare to find a good shot of NYC that includes midtown, downtown, Brooklyn, and Jersey City skylines. New York does it all. It has the greatest concentrated massive skyline, bar none. Chicago does it second best.

Hong Kong's a great view from above, but is basically just a sea of the same residential highrises crammed together and punctuated by a handful of standouts. Never really been all that impressed with Hong Kong's skyline. Shanghai is just an ugly, scattered mess... it's main core has some height, but pales in comparison to others' concentration.

To reiterate, NYC #1, Chicago #2. All others continue to copy, yet still can't seem to quite get it right and remain poor substitutes at best.
I couldn't have said it better plus NYC and Chicago have so many classic old towers that these newer cities will never have and they lack character. I only care about those 2 cities and I will be in NYC in 11 days anyway. I was in Chicago back in December. Those are the only 2 city skylines in NA that push me into a full state of AWE.

3. Chicago
4. Vancouver
5. Shanghai
6. San Diego (I have to be a homer, I live amongst the skyline)
7. New York

1. HK (the mountains make this amazing)
2. NYC (from a, I guess, purely objective standpoint, I would rate Chicago over New York, but I get this strange nostalgic feeling whenever I see New York. It's kind of weird. probably just because it's in so many movies and everything. The empire state building is the best at night with the lights shining at the top.
3. Chicago
4. Vancouver (I'm from here and I feel that it's a lot better when you're actually there than just looking at pictures. I'm sure this applies to many other cities too, but the fact that Vancouver isn't as big makes it less impressive in photos. In real life, it feels much bigger and the blue mountains in the background make it so much nicer.
5. Singapore

I like Shanghai, but I don't really like the pearl tower too much. same goes with the CN tower. I also love Dubai's tall skyscrapers, but the city as a whole does not have the best skyline because the buildings are too spread out

I'm from Chicago also.... But that Hong Kong skyline just leaves me breathless!! Then I'd say Chicago and NYC are tied, Toronto and maybe Dubai..

I'm not going to make a list because I would have too much trouble. I will represent Toronto though. I think it holds its own pretty well. Iconic and growing by the day.

I like Calgary's skyline but it's turning into nothing more than just a cluster of tall office buildings (although on a grid system which I like) but it's like if Denver had a few more tallies. Here in Canada anyways, Vancouver takes the cake and than Toronto. Montreal and Calgary can duel it out for 3nd place while Hamilton takes a far fourth http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ioSkylineD.JPG

My top ten:

1 New York (the sheer numbers, and an on-going building boom)
2 Hong Kong (the prettiest with the mountains)
3 Chicago (certainly in anyone's top three)
4 Toronto (Ah, that lakefront, Did anyone mention a building boom?)
5 Shanghai (Makes up for lack of density with height. Wait for that new tallest!)
6 Sydney
7 Sao Paolo (sheer numbers, not as much height as those higher ranked)
8 Vancouver (sheer numbers, density, although not as much height as others higher ranked)
9 Houston (or Seattle) (Houston has the height, but several very tall buildings are not even in downtown. Seattle: gotta like that waterfront view)

Anyway, this is my opinion, which, combined with a quarter, have a combined value of 25 cents to most people.

the problem with the ny skyline is its hard to get a view of it all. that shot of all the ny skylines is from up on a hill way out in new jersey! the problem with chicago is the buildings are all lined up in a row, there is no depth outside of the loop. thats weak! i could go to south florida and see many more apt buildings continuously lined up along a waterfront. hk and vegas are even better at lining them up, but of course like southeast florida the buildings are much tackier than chi. now places like seattle or rio have plenty of outstanding viewing sites all around town, i'll give them that, but outside of the spaceneedle & christ statue there is nothing of note. i guess for major cities i just prefer aerials and streetviews of the lower older denser layered cityscapes like paris and buenos aires. or the wackier midblowing eyecandy cityscapes like sao paulo or tokyo or shibam, yemen (now that one really used to be a major desert metropolis!).

Manhattan, HK, Chicago - Shanghai is an up-&-comer - Toronto/Singapore/Sydney/Dubai also have fantastic skylines.
