If by empty or nearly empty you mean mostly full then yeah.

LOL... almost every other major US skyline is more impressive than Houston's "in person"... St. Louis, New Orleans, Baltimore and certainly Miami. It's b/c the skyline is essentially one wall of supertalls that block any of the other interesting structures from view (the old Gulf building and Neils Esperson have long been lost in DT skyline shot, except from the east) Houston takes a great picture, but past that other cities have the hand up. Plus it helps when you've got something happening at street level too, which is still lacking in Houston.

I'm starting to see the point of other forumers here... why do we keep having to do this boosterism crap for Houston. It's a great city, but we shouldn't try to make it into Miami or Paris or Austin. We need to be glad for what we've got and what we're getting, learn from other cities about what they do right, and continue to make Houston better. That's not going to be accomplished in a boosterism thread.

^^I agree completely. Houston is a great US city on its own, I enjoy it when ever I visit, its got a massive and cosmopolitan feel to it.
Matt just seems to have some type of inferiority complex going, I might understand if I was bashing Houston, but thats not the case. The things happening in other cities are impressive and fun to watch...Miami just happens to have grown tremendously in the last 10 years.

St. Louis is impressive because it has the arch, New Orleans is impressive because of a large lake, Baltimore is impressive because it has older structures, Miami is impressive because it over built with the inclination it was going to have all of those high rises full of people...which was opposite the case.

if all the buildings in houston were formed and arranged together it'd be huge ... culturally they are similar ... houston has tall buildings spread all over the city

btw, how many of you houston forumers have actually been to paris? it's absolutely massive, and you wanna talk about building clusters spread all over the city? come on guys, and get real when trying to, most ridiculously, boast about the city.

That looks like the "ultimate in stupidity" to you?

It sure doesn't to me.

That's right the title is wrong, it should be comparaison of Paris and Houston skyline or something else.
The comparaison was quite interesting, that's right the the form of La Defense and Houston downtown skylines are similar, even if the height are different.

LOL. This is such a random comparison but I'll go ahead and throw in my scorecard as someone who has actually been to both cities unlike all you online warriors.

Height: Houston over Paris

Density, Architecture, Composition, Pedestrian Traffic, Aesthetics, Overall Urban Atmosphere: Paris over Houston

That's it. Game Over.

I doubt anybody with a mind would pick Houston over Paris, so i wouldn't call us online warriors. But skyline-wise Houston wins, almost everything else Paris wins, but then again Paris has has a longer time to develop itself as opposed to Houston, so this shouldn't even be discussed.

Since skylines do not appear out of the thin air but are the result of demographic and economic underlying forces, I compiled a few background stats re Paris and Houston metro areas. Enjoy!

Paris metro area:
- land area: 14,518 km² (5,606 sq. mi)
- population: 12,016,000 (in Jan. 2009)
- population growth: +82,000 per year (average between 1999 and 2009)
- gross metropolitan product (GMP): 731.3 billion US dollars (in 2007)
- GMP per capita: 62,746 US dollars (in 2007)
- jobs: 5,747,000 (Jan. 2008)
- job growth: + 68,000 jobs per year (average between 2004 and 2008)
- GMP per job: 131,593 US dollars (in 2007)
- number of Fortune Global 500 companies: 37
- air traffic: 89,569,019 passengers (in 2008)

Houston metro area:
- land area: 23,124 km² (8,928 sq. mi)
- population: 5,728,000 (in July 2008)
- population growth: +123,000 per year (average between 2000 and 2008)
- gross metropolitan product (GMP): 378.3 billion US dollars (in 2007)
- GMP per capita: 67,578 US dollars (in 2007)
- jobs: 2,636,000 (Jan. 2008)
- job growth: +57,000 jobs per year (average between 2004 and 2008)
- GMP per job: 145,159 US dollars (in 2007)
- number of Fortune Global 500 companies: 6
- air traffic: 50,485,187 passengers (in 2008)

Personally, when compiling these I was particularly impressed by Houston's GMP per capita and per job. I didn't expect it to be so high. It's higher than almost any other US metro area in fact, including NYC.

this is such a silly thread. i love houston but would drop everything fora chance to move to paris. the city is lovely and has everything. Houston is an infant when it comes to cities and if given a another 1000 years to advance would still not compare to paris.

sorry guys.
