Winnipeg - Slurpee Capital of the World

10 years of brain freeze: We're No. 1 Slurpee sippers againBy: Matt Preprost

DRINK it up Winnipeg. It's now 10 years of being the champion of Slurpee suckers. The city will be given the Slurpee Capital of the World crown for the 10th year in a row.

Specific numbers aren't available, but Winnipeg sold 20 per cent more Slurpees than Calgary, which finished second. Southwest Detroit placed third.

Each year, 7-Eleven awards the title to the city with the most Slurpee cups sold per store. Winnipeg has won the title since 1998, when the corporation first started handing out the award.

"Slurpees are part of life for Manitobans and Winnipeggers," 7-Eleven Canada spokeswoman Sheila Calder said. "It's a huge achievement and something that all Manitobans alike should pat themselves on the back for."

Winnipeg's official status will be revealed Friday at city hall when Mayor Sam Katz will receive an honourary Slurpee cup trophy, said Karl Copp, who oversees a number of 7-Eleven stores in the city.

Calder added that Katz will also get a commemorative plaque marking Winnipeg's reign for the past decade.

The ceremony kicks off a two-day celebration for sweet-toothed Winnipeggers to snag free Slurpee schwag.

At the Bomber game Friday night, Copp said the first 2,000 people who show up to the south end zone at Canad Inns Stadium will get a 52-ounce Milt Stegall mug. On Saturday, 7-Eleven stores across the city will be giving away 42,000 free small Slurpees.

Slurpee sales rise when temperatures soar in the summer, but they also remain steady when the mercury plummets to -40 C. Slurpees have fast become part of the culture in Winnipeg, Calder said.

"What differentiates Winnipeg is people drink Slurpees in every season. In winter, kids are having Slurpees while they're out tobogganing," she said.

Last year, Kennewick, Wash., tried to dethrone Winnipeg from its sugary claim to fame, announcing they were the true Slurpee capital.

Don Mariotto, who owns the only 7-Eleven in Kennewick and serves 40,000 people, said the title was his after an aggressive marketing blitz. However, 7-Eleven said Mariotto was measuring his victory by sales dollars, not the number of Slurpee cups sold per store.

But Mariotto's one store still sells more Slurpees per day than any other store in the world, said Margaret Chabris, a U.S. 7-Eleven spokeswoman.

Slurpee Facts:

Slurpee drinks are all served at 28 degrees.

Early prototypes for the Slurpee machine made use of an automobile air conditioning unit.

Slurpee was "invented" when some sodas were put in a freezer to cool them down — and they became all slushy.

Bob Stanford, a 7-Eleven agency director, coined the term "Slurpee" in 1967.

Winnipeg, Canada is generally thought to be the Slurpee capital of the world, due to their amazing Slurpee fanaticism.

When Slurpee first hit the market, it wasn’t self-serve. The machine was behind the counter and the clerk served the product to you.

At Slurpee, we call it a BrainFreeze. The scientific name for it is Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia. Really.

Slurpee drinks are carbonated.

Slurpee Day is July 11th.

Sugar is the anti-freezing agent in most Slurpee drinks.

American Slurpee is injected with air. Canadian Slurpee is not.

Half of all Slurpee drinks are purchased between the hours of 4 and 11 p.m.

Every day more than 11.6 million Slurpee drinks are consumed around the world.

Pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth is a known cure for brainfreeze.

In 2004, 7-Eleven created an edible Slurpee straw.

In 1998, Slurpee Lip Balm hit the market.

More than 40% of all Slurpee drinks are sold during the months of June, July and August.

Every year enough Slurpee drinks are sold to fill up 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Only one private individual owns a bona fide Slurpee machine. The rest are in 7-Eleven.

The average Slurpee drinker's age is 29.

So this is why all those people on Main street are missing their legs.

Seriously, in this age of obesity should we really be celebrating the fact that people in this town part with their money to drink a sludge made from pure sugar?

Maybe the reason why we lead the world in slurpee consumption is because the rest of the world has enough common sense not to poison themselves with this shit.

Are you kidding? Winning this slurpee title for several years running affords Winnipeggers a golden opportunity to revel in the self-flagellation that we all love!

To wit: we can beat ourselves up every year that 7-Eleven announces that we're the Slurpee drinking champions, and then when one of the contenders like Calgary or Detroit finally passes us, we can beat ourselves up even more for declining as a city!

What could be more perfect?

Talk about making mountains out of molehills. It's a silly title bestowed on the city by a convenience store chain.

I say we shut this humiliating thread down, and maybe delete it, before too many out-of-towners see this and think even less of Winnipeg.
