That Atcheson is a serious buffoon; I can't believe what comes out of his mouth.

Honestly, nearly every time he's quoted in the paper I feel embarrassed.

Capital Pointe in Regina did the same thing. What was originally an 18 story condo and 8 story hotel turned into a 27 story condo and 11 story hotel, which after 3 years still hasn't started.

I admire the entrepreneurial spirit and the desire to build big, but I'd rather get the project done than get plans approved for a better project that isn't feasible.
capital pointe should be breaking ground in a couple of months as the first phase of the over 1 mil dollar electrical bank feeding downtown is done. the developer is footing the bill on this one. yes this projects had its ups and downs but it looks like its finally going to materialize. Hopefully River Landing gets started soon too.

Saskatoon's riverbank building slated to break ground in 2014

Victory Majors Investment Corp. president says development isn't delayed

Reported by Karin Yeske, NewsTalk 650 CKOM

Sept 12, 2013

The developer of a $250-million office-hotel-condo development in Saskatoon’s River Landing admits the project is slower to start than he anticipated but says it isn’t delayed.

The project headed by Victory Majors Investment Corp. had its concept plan approved last year. Eyes are turning to the megaproject on the riverbank now that a new neighbouring development called The Banks has been approved by the City of Saskatoon.

According to Victory Majors’ agreement with the city, there is no timeline to start construction on what is known as Parcel Y, considered one of the most valuable pieces of land in Saskatoon. The contract specifies that once construction begins on the site, Victory Majors has 18 months to complete all excavation required for the construction of the development.

“I do appreciate the interest. We are very accountable to the community and our stakeholders, of which obviously is the City of Saskatoon,” John Nasser, president of Victory Majors Investment Corp., said, adding construction should begin in 2014.

“I can’t specify that and I quite frankly can’t commit to a date until I know an actual date,” he said, adding construction will likely take three to five years from start to finish.

The development, which includes an office complex, a 27-storey residential tower, hotel and one of the city’s largest parkades, was expected to break ground last summer. Changes to the concept plan however pushed back the start dates because city council had to review the amendments.

I'm guessing Nasser meant to say "measure twice, cut once"

While I will wait with bated breath for construction to begin, this is encouraging news.

This is great news. Hoping it goes ahead as planned and is not scaled back in any way.

Quote:
“We’re a little slower than we had hoped but we are happy with where we are at, at this current point,” Nasser said.

“I would say there are a lot of balls in the air and the odd time one gets dropped but overall they are still up in the air.”

I agree this is great news. Relieved that they have chosen to share at least some information....staying quiet for so long has certainly caused a lot of apprehension in our community. Still a little vague on details, but at least it is something.

I have no doubt The Banks development announcement spurred Victory Majors to provide a response.

Fingers crossed....

And the current height limit for this site is 95m, correct? But they are only going to build up to 92m IIRC.

It's times like this when we seem to be hopeful that this project may actually still happen that brings me back to why on earth would they have ever decided to build the airport where they did.

That runway is like a skyscraper chastity belt. This is good news, but I hope this doesn't end up being another cautionary tale about the importance of establishing deadlines. Believe it when I see it.

Because the airport was way out in the middle of nowhere when it was established in the 1920's....

Always love the artistic license they take with renderings. Like the sailboats here cruising along the South Saskatchewan river.

Does the height limit cover the ENTIRE downtown of Saskatoon?
