That tapering section in the middle looks awful... I'm glad they didn't choose this one.

I like it. The only flaw is the x-bracing blocking the views of EVERY window. Looks cool on the outside but would be very annoying from the inside.

It means they aren't revealing the firm that designed that tower, while also pointing out that it's a design that won't be built as shown. Anybody's guess as to why it was displayed though - is somebody pushing Barnett's hand? Anyway, I woud have loved to see all of the proposals.

Yes, for the sea port. Don't know if the tower is still a part of it because the article I posted is over a year old.

I would have been really satisfied with the design. I can't wait to be standing in Central Park, looking at the classic 59th street buildings being loomed over by these 1000+ trophy skyscrapers. The guy who designed the Birds Nest stadium in Beijing is the architect that was selected for this job. I've looked at his work, and the man can make a parking garage look awesome, but I didn't see that he had designed skyscrapers before. If he hasn't, then I hope his skill transitions well to the vertical.

Man oh man, this is exactly what Midtown needed. I remember picking up a friend (a former Chicago resident who had never been to NYC) from JFK and then driving him to an event we were both attending. Once we got on the BQE and headed North he was certainly impressed, and immediately admitted that Midtown was bigger and more grandiose than the loop, but he noted that all of the buildings seem to be around the same height (the plateau that is oft-mentioned here). I totally agreed with him, and have always been of the opinion that Midtown needed a few super-talls rising above the rest of the pack.

There will be no shortage of supertalls for midtown in the coming years, we may actually end up with so many 1,000 footers in that area that they will form another plateau, with a few standouts like this and 432 Park. Not that I'm complaining

I'm not a huge fan of this design, but I like their trajectory. Seems like something iconic should rise on this site (or at least I hope).

Whatever they decide to build here I think it needs some kind of setback, curve, or spire close to the top... something interesting... so that its not another 432 park ave. Not that I have anything against 432, but one flat-topped super tall per street please.

To be honest, i really don't like that design. Like NYguy said, it reminds me of the old design of the freedom tower, or at least the top of the old design, which i thought was really ugly. I just hope the design that is picked doesn't have an all glass facade, since it seems like theres tons of those going up right now, but i'm sure if it is it will still be amazing.

All I ask is that its bulkier than 432 Park and has a roof height taller than Sears... that's all. My needs are modest.

It's possible that they may want to top 432 Park for the highest apartment in the City, but I don't think they would be looking at Sears (Willis). If it were in Manhattan, perhaps.

The family-run clothier plans to anchor a future skyscraper on West 57th Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue that will be built by New York real-estate mogul Gary Barnett, according to sources close to the talks. “This is going to be a major store — they want to make a statement,” according to one insider briefed on the plans, adding that the shop is expected to occupy several stories in addition to the ground floor.

While the main storefront will stretch along the north side of West 57th, the developers are also angling for an entrance at 1780 Broadway, whose façade will likely be preserved as an historic landmark. The side that faces West 58th will likely be used for loading docks, as well as additional access and parking for offices and tenants of high-rise condos, sources said.

“This is going to make the West Side a true shopping mecca that’s competitive with the East Side,” said Faith Hope Consolo, chairman of retail leasing at Prudential Douglas Elliman. The Time Warner Center, two blocks to the north on Columbus Circle, has surprised real-estate insiders with its success as a retail destination, she noted.

Over the past decade, Nordstrom execs have scoured Manhattan’s shopping corridors for a suitable flagship site, ultimately ruling that most locations were either too small or too out of the way. Candidates have included the former Drake Hotel on Park Avenue and the Hudson Yards on the West Side. More recently, rumors have pegged 3 Columbus Circle, a building across the street from the parcel that’s slated for development, and even One 57, the 1,000-foot-high hotel complex that Barnett is building one block to the east.
That helps get this tower moving along sooner rather than later.

Nordstrom Said to Sign Deal for Site in Manhattan

The location on 57th Street is about 20 blocks north of Macy’s and well west of Saks Fifth Avenue and the luxury stores on Madison Avenue. But Nordstrom may be trying to capitalize on the success of the multilevel retailing at Time Warner Center in nearby Columbus Circle, where the sales volume at its shops reportedly runs to about $1,600 per square foot.

Brooke White, a spokeswoman for Nordstrom, declined to comment, as did Gary Barnett, chief executive of Extell Development. But the real estate executives, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to discuss it, said that Nordstrom planned to make an announcement about the store on Thursday with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

Extell plans to erect a one-million-square-foot tower, with a hotel and apartments, on the site of what was once a Hard Rock Cafe. There is currently a supermarket on the parcel and a small store on the 58th Street edge of the property. About a block to the east of the site, Extell is building One 57th Street, a 90-story residential tower and hotel.

Nordstrom has agreed to buy its portion of the building in a deal valued at more than $300 million. But if the company spent two decades looking for the right site, it will have to wait until 2018 to move in, the executives said.

That's certainly good news, and I'd have to imagine if Nordstrom signed this deal then this tower can't be more than 4-5 years away.

More like probably not more than one or two years. Great news, that's exactly the kind of store that area needs!
