Now that there has been a good amount of time since the new Honolulu metro has broken ground, does anyone have any good renderings or discussion pictures?

What is the status on development of the line? Where has construction started?

Honolulu’s Rail Project Back in the Crossfire This Fall

Yonah Freemark
August 18th, 2012

» Front runner in mayoral contest opposes rail project. But it’s already under construction.

In 2008, Honolulu’s citizens approved the construction of a new high-capacity rail line that would provide quick public transportation along the city’s coastline. The $5.3-billion, 20-mile project is one of the largest in the nation, but it is backed by a steady source of local revenues and the almost definite promise of a federal New Starts capital grant that will cover about a third of costs. Moreover, it has held the support of the city’s leaders consistently since 2005, when pro-rail Mayor Mufi Hannemann entered office. The project broke ground last year.

After the mayoral primary earlier this month, however, the project’s future is decidedly up in the air. Current mayor Peter Carlisle, a major supporter of the project, received only 23% of the vote and will not make it to the second round. On the other hand, former Hawaii Governor Ben Cayetano received 45% of the ballot; he has made his opposition to the rail project one of the primary arguments of his campaign; he has promoted the implementation of a bus rapid transit system instead. In the second round this November, Cayetano will face former city manager and rail supporter Kirk Caldwell, who received 29% of the vote.

Wow, seriously, wow, who in their right mind would even think of canceling such a fantastic project that is already at the stage of putting the columns in place!

My guess is that if he wins, he will launch an investigation and say that due to contracts and commitments, they must "reluctantly" go forward.

Is it possible for the city council to prevent the mayor from stopping construction? And is it possible for any of the businesses that already have signed contracts for this rail line to threaten to file lawsuits against the city for breaking those contracts?

Or like the Cincinnati Subway? Rising construction cost cause fund to run out and halt construction in the late 1920s. The subway tunnel has been abandoned to date due to change of government, vote outcome, economy, etc. The above ground section was demolished to make way for interstate highway.

Or they'll half ass it from Kapolei to Aloha stadium and cancel the later phases, resulting in a worthless line to nowhere.

Let's hope nothing like that happens. It's almost 100 years later, and the nimbys still use it as their main argument for why Cincinnati shouldn't have rail transportation.

People usually don't vote for candidates over a single issue. It'll take a majority of the city council to kill the rail project. The mayor isn't a voting member of the city council which contains nine members. The city council balances the power of the mayor and district attorney. Outside of the political influence and bully pulpit of the mayor's office, the mayor has zero influence on the council and on the rail project.

/\ Exactly. The same way people were screaming bloody murder when Rob Ford was elected mayor of Toronto. He (Ford) is but one vote on a large council and couldn't get his LRT-killing plans passed.

FWIW, Ben Cayetano, the guy attempting to kill the rail project and likely to become mayor of Honolulu, posted a comment on The Transport Politic.

Hopefully enough City Council members will stand strong for rail rapid transit rather than the BRT he's supposedly pushing.

Carlisle + Caldwell, the two rail supporters, add up for 52% of the vote.

How many voters for Carlisle could be expected to switch their votes to Cateyano for the run-off?

Few did, Caldwell won the election.

Good news for Honolulu Rail.

If every construction project got delayed because a candidate for office opposes it, few projects would ever get built.

Per Honolulu Rail's FAQ page:
The initial section from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium is slated to open in 2015; Kapolei to Middle Street in 2017; and the system is set to be fully operational, from Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, in 2019.

yeah, i literally did a pump fist when i saw that caldwell defeated cayetano, glory. honestly, the 45% of people who voted for that anti-rail bozo will, ten years from now, be telling people that they always supported rail, that it's great and that they can't imagine hono without it. prediction: the waikiki and university phase will be added done by 2021.
