I would say it is in the sense that the overly negative reputation it often gets - especially in the east coast - does not match up with the reality at all. Most people get their opinion of LA from from MTV, which is a shame considering just how amazing the city really is.

LA is one of the nation's densest cities (#1 or #2, depending on the scope you use.) A lack of density was never LA's problem...the problem is a lack of urban design and a culture of catering to cars at the expense of pedestrians.

Luckily, for those of us that care about such things, there's neighborhoods like Downtown, Hollywood, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Pasadena, and Long Beach that do have fairly good urban design and are walkable as anything on the east coast

Having never been and knowing it is the model of sprawl and car centric culture I like the pedestrians and even the biker.

L.A. is statistically dense but functionally and visually suburban. DistrictDirt saying those places are 'walkable' is a bit of a stretch. Even downtown struggles to be 'walkable' with its swaths of deadspace. don't buy the hype about 'urban renaissance', L.A. is a chore to walk in no matter which hood you're in.
