BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Projects such as the $46 million CrossPlex in Five Points West and the $64 million baseball park downtown are supposed to spur new development, and officials say that is happening.
Birmingham Mayor William Bell said talks are taking place with a potential hotel operator at the CrossPlex, the indoor track and field and aquatics center at the site of Fair Park.
"We are looking at a possible hotel deal for the CrossPlex," Bell said in an interview. "We've got a number of good things coming down the line."
It's the kind of spin-off activity Bell and others hoped the facility would generate.

I remember when people were complaining about how "no one would ever wanna go to a dangerous place in Birmingham!!!!" I'm so glad we've started to turn around public opinion in this town... The bookings that the facility has experienced will do wonders in improving the image the city has outside of it, and from within.
I just hope this hotel project doesn't turn out to be some cookie cutter Best Western...
