The reason we can't is that there exists a
production-possibility frontier. We cannot produce everything that we need independent of other countries (either at all, or at a reasonable cost).
In the
more industrious age, manufactured goods were much less sophisticated and complicated to produce, and there was much less variety in the marketplace.
