By counting the lanes in that picture, and adding the three extra lanes on the right side that are not in the pic, it looks to be about 19 or 20 lanes at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza.

Stuck in traffic on Interstate 10 and Riggs Rd, 22 miles outside of downtown Phoenix--yes that's a 75 MPH sign, and it was worse on this for miles and miles... on a Saturday afternoon no less.

The white truck is a Border Patrol SUV. I have no idea what they were doing up here.

Arizona's roads are choking under the recent sprawl.

There are 20 westbound lanes at the toll plaza:

... plus five eastbound lanes, so 80 is 25 lanes at that point. But get this: The El Toro Y (5/405 interchange) in Orange County is 26 lanes at one point.

J Church,

According to this Google Image, it looks 80 East is 6 lanes eastbound, plus 2 or 3 more going towards 880 South = 28 or 29 total
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...03659&t=k&om=1

as for the 405/5 interchange in Irvine, check out the picture here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=e...07317&t=k&om=1

I cannot tell how many lanes it has but it does look to be about 26.

That picture is absolutely incredible. Especially the fact there's a big ass "JESUS SAVES" billboard above the freeway. I don't think it could get any more perfect than that.

Incidentally, any idea where that is?

Ed, you're right--what's going on eastbound at that point is three lanes each headed for 80, 580 and 880. I'd forgotten the split was already underway as you pass the toll plaza. Meaning: Draw a line across the freeway at that point, and you've got 29 lanes. Somebody tell the Orange County Transportation Authority to stop boasting!

I see 29 lanes as well--that's one hell of a stretch of interstate freeway!

I've never taken it during rush hour before. But I've waited as long as an hour and a half from the toll plaza to The City (7 miles) on a Saturday or Sunday morning or afternoon, especially when it's sunny or there is some event going on in The City.

But in the dot-com heyday of 1999 or 2000, I took the Bay Bridge from Berkeley to SFO, a trip of around 20 miles, which took 2.5 hours. There might have been an accident on the bridge, though.

Not since that first day. Now you gotta be on there at like 3 in the AM for the Dan Ryan to not kick your ass. You seen/been on it lately?

The other day I drove across it at 83rd St. It was like 8AM. Traffic was sitting. Literally. About a half-hour later I drove back across it, again at 83rd. I wouldn't doubt that those were the EXACT same cars and trucks (lotsa trucks) that were there my first time over. I found it so very hilarious...

And thing is, I was listening to 100.3 a few minutes after I first went over and the traffic girl there said 25 min from 95th St in. I was like, aw hhhhHEEEEELL naw! Way to send people off. Maybe more like, 25 min for you to move again once you stop. I don't usually even go near the Ryan nowadays during the day or evening if I'm driving somewhere, so that was my first on-site look at the daytime gruesomeness since the construction went full swing. It was strong visual evidence supporting the horror stories I've heard, which have been numerous and similar.

Since the state took away the embedded traffic-trip sensors (have those timing cameras they been promising online fully yet?) and taken the science out of time estimates, it's like some of the radio and TV traffic people are just pulling numbers out of their ass for the Ryan.

But this scene I speak of makes me think of the Married...With Children episode where the Bundys tried to go on a Labor Day road trip but they spent the whole episode sitting in traffic and got into fights and shit, and Peg and Kelly and Bud walked home from the expressway and Al got so pissed he rallied the people to tear the pavement up in rebellion.

If I had a camera, I'd take and post pics for y'all, and y'all would be like, . Perhaps someone here will eventually (I bet Segun would get a kick outta taking some shots of the scene if he decides to take the Red Line cross town).

But not enough people will smarten up and take the L and Metra for that situation to be alleviated, I don't think. I honestly fear for the safety of a person who crashes or stalls there at the wrong time--and unfortunately I mean pissing off the wrong person/people because of it, moreso than any danger of getting hit.

The longest its ever taken me was 3.5-4 hrs back in 1997 during the BART strike. It was just awful-my coworkers who live farther away from The City took up to 6 hrs to drive 50 miles-one of the worst traffic days ever!

Usually a solo driver coming from Oakland can take an hour to 90 minutes during the week-also depending on what time you leave. Usually 45 minutes. A lot less if you carpool.

Sat and Sun evenings are the heaviest traffic days on The Bridge!

Also,
The Jam begins far away from The Bridge itself. 24 can back up to Lafayette, 580 and 880 can back up to East Oakland and 80 can back up to Richmond.

Yep. You can actually see the whole thing in that first pic (it's two interchanges, basically).

For the record: BART from West Oakland to Embarcadero: eight minutes.

Driving north on the Dan Ryan during rush hour while taking pictures wasn't the smartest thing I've done.

That was back when they were doing preliminary expressway work and work on the Red Line L. That wasn't the most friendly environment for traffic, either but at least all lanes were open then save for the far right local lane on occasion.

If you go to the same location (approaching 39th St) now, at the same time of day, and try and take a similar pic, you'll not only be in less danger doing so as long as you stay in your car you'll have plenty of time to take all the pictures of the surroundings you want. And enjoy the sweet skyline view.

I know it sounds like I'm overstating things but it's really an unprecedented nightmare that people need to adapt to in order to have any hope of relieving.

Great pic by the way. From the Ryan is my favorite angle to view downtown save for the south lakeshore. And it's a perspective that is rarely seen on this forum.

EDIT 03 May: John Hilkevitch of the Chicago Tribune noted back on Monday that over the course of the last month the inbound, morning-rush Ryan has experienced a significant reduction in traffic, while the outbound, evening-rush Ryan has experienced a less significant but still-noticeable traffic reduction. Unfortunately instead of using transit, drivers are just going the alternate routes, clogging them--tho I heard tonight from WGN that Ashland from Roosevelt to 95th was 30min at about 6PM, which isn't bad. But I can imagine the problem it is at its traffic height, as Stony Island which has a higher capacity has been a no-fun ride during the rushes (as I've witnessed personally). And Lake Shore Drive has seen a 120% increase in traffic as cited by Hilkevitch.

A Chicago forumer with a good camera should check out the alternate routes LOL
