Saint John - New-Brunswick :: One street at a time

Saint John had his heyday prior to the 1900s. By 1851 Saint John, with a population of 31,000, was the third largest city in British North America, after Montreal and Quebec City.

The main industry was shipbuilding – it was a major player on the world stage; the industry finally shut down in 2002. Due to its location for railways and servicing the triangle trade between British North America, the Caribbean, and Britain, the city was poised to be one of Canada's leading urban centres.

A disastrous fire on June 20, 1877 destroyed a large portion of the central business district. It was the 16th recorded fire in the city and the worst ever. (Wikipedia)

I wanted to showcase the opulence and the wealth that once characterized Saint John by picturing Germain Street.

Saint John is such a beautiful, typically North American city. I wish it had become more regionally important. Not that I wish any harm to Moncton or Fredericton, especially the latter (because it's a whole different, greater level of beauty. One of Canada's most beautiful, easily).

And I still wish it gets more life breathed into it. It can't be easy - in a province with two other major cities and a region with one (relatively) very large city. There has to be some... leeching of the life in Saint John... going on.

This picture, especially, is brilliant: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8116/8...174e6ea3_b.jpg

I love how the brick is still red. In St. John's, we've painted over most of ours. There are only a few blocks with still-red brick.

Great photos! Please, please, please do continue with other street!

That city is so awesome. If my plan to drive back here next August comes to fruition, I'm absolutely making a stop in Saint John. I love its look.

Very nice walk along Germain Street! Thanks for sharing, Erick!

Saint John looks very pretty with all those buildings in red brick.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

I'll repeat what I said in the Atlantic section. Great stuff and keep it up Erick!

Though I do wish you'd stop making me homesick for the Maritimes.

Nothing wrong with Calgary, though. I could live there, easily.

^True enough. Calgary is pretty awesome, and the crazy, unpredictable weather here does remind me of the coast.

Haha, the weather here lately has been reminding me of Calgary. It's been sunny, snowy, windy, warm, cold... Today.

Only in a province as dubious as New Brunswick, could a city like Saint John be so neglected. It generates the majority of revenue for NB and never sees a just return.
Unfair equity issues...
Cause for protest I'd say

Thanks for posting this.

While visiting Saint John in '94 I remember thinking "You can't take a bad photo in this town" because of it's location and loads of beautiful, brick Victorian buildings. A very picturesque city.

I thought exactly the same thing when I drove through back in '88. I had taken the ferry from Digby NS and didn't know what to expect. I was very impressed with the architecture.

We took the same ferry.
I remember the closer we got to the city the fishier it started to smell but once we got there the sights of this beautiful city made us forget the odors from the Bay of Fundy.

Awesome. Quite possibly my favorite Canadian city. Absolutely my favorite among smaller Canadian cities.
