Wood is more than fine with me, especially considering what this development does to improve this section of Broad. Some people have knee-jerk reactions to anything even remotely connected to suburbia. Frankly, I'm surprised we aren't complaining about grass.

Grass? Didnt you know William Penn invented grass?

Before grass and Philadelphia the world was covered in lava from mount doom.

William Penn is the half brother of Frodo Baggins. FYI.

Wood is limited to a total of 4 floors per the IRC, so the first floor being steel makes sense.

There is nothing wrong with wood construction, it's been being used for a thousands of years.

Get off your high horse.

Oooooo - touchy touchy! Maybe try switching to decaf. This is a trivial topic, certainly nothing to get cyber-macho about.

That concrete median needs flowers and trees. Maybe in a better economic time?

I wouldn't count it out....they will probably wait untill the concrete barriers are removed from the sidewalks

You have to experience Broad Street in person to understand that trees and flowers have no business there. I like your thinking but not here, wouldnt work.

They have those green traffic islands all over California and I think it makes the streetscape look a thousand times better. I think most people would agree that the city most definitely needs an aesthetic facelift... No? If you did that along all of broad street it wouldn't look out of place at all. Plus, it would be one less impervious surface and you wouldn't have to spend money to fix the concrete every few decades, either.

But, you need money to pay the folks for the upkeep...to buy the plantings, to cut the grass, to keep the shrubs pruned. The city doesn't have that luxury. You would probably need it to be subsidized by a charity or other such philanthropic organization. Deep in South Philly, they use the center median to park. Think they will give in easily to losing their parking spaces?

Nice idea, but....

good idea but i don't think people will allow their parking spaces to be grassed over. the parkway however, could very well use some landscaping in the center lanes which is currently filled with ugly yellow paint.
