Toronto's Spadina extension has been moved to the completed list. The commuter rail improvements aren't listed separately since they're not new coverage, and the BRT isn't rail (but we appreciate the updates on those good projects nonetheless).

The LA/San Bernardino extension was missing from the construction list, but has been added to the completed list.

Mod note: A discussion had started here about a vision for potential US high speed rail, and the wisdom thereof. This thread is for tracking currently under construction rail only, so I split the HSR discussion off into its own thread.

That does remind me, though:

All Aboard Florida, aka the Brightline, will open between West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale on January 8. The Miami section will still be under construction, with Orlando as a future phase yet to begin.

It’s separate, this will use Stadler DMUs. However, one round trip Metrolink train will run to downtown Redlands.

For Los Angeles:
If the Gold Line Foothill/Montclair Extension is on this list, the Purple Line Extension Phase 2 deserves to be on the list.

The Gold Line extension has only awarded a utility relocation contract thus far and has not awarded the actual design-build contract for the line:
http://www.foothillgoldline.org/imag...g_Ceremony.pdf

Quote:
The first three years of construction will be used to relocate strategic utilities, conduct pre-construction activities, hire a design-build contractor and finalize the project design. Major construction will begin in 2020 and consist of two construction phases: (1) relocating/rebuilding the freight/Metrolink systems and (2) building the Gold Line light rail system. Substantial completion is anticipated in 2026.
Purple Line Extension Phase 2 has already awarded the design-build contract and has already started utility relocations.

January 2017 notice on utility relocations:

Notice to Proceed for Phase 2 contractor:

Charlotte's 9.3 mile long Blue Line extension is scheduled to open for service March 16th, 2018 - just in time for the first and second round games of the NCAA tournament.

Originally CATS had hoped to finish the line my August 2017 but it had to be pushed back. Still, it was able to be completed under budget.

Everytime I see those enormous flyovers with a dangerous grade crossing right at the bottom instead of underpasses it just makes me irritable. Does any other nation on planet Earth build light rail like this?

Charlotte's Blue line extension looks like it's designed and modeled on Denver's SE LRT line. The main difference is the at-grade crossings. Denver's SE LRT doesn't have at-grade crossings. But the station design, art, and overall feel are very similar. In fact, sections of the Blue Line extension feel like Denver's SE LRT, other sections feel like Denver's SW LRT and then the inner city section feels like Denver's West LRT, all chained together into one LRT line.

I took the Montclair extension off the list. When either one breaks ground for full construction, not just utilities, let me know.

The Fort Lauderdale - West Palm Beach section opened to the public on the 13th of January. You can now buy tickets.

Updated the list to reflect Brightline's opening. The Miami section is still listed as u/c.

Charlotte video is very well done, but very depressing to see how low density that area is. What's the point?

And I agree with the previous comment. They have this great flyover....and a grade crossing at the end of the ramp. Really?

^it's a ridiculous way to build high-capacity transit. An ounce of investigating will show the best international practice is to run below grade under roadways as much as possible with the ultimate goal to avoid any sort of grade crossing interference for crying out loud.

Tunnelling is very expensive but elevation isn't and would have been a better choice.

I'm not talking about tunneling. A simple cut and cover trench had to be competitive cost wise with an enormous embankment and aerial structure.

Go Transit breaks ground on Stoney Creek station, which is the first step for extending rail service towards Niagara Falls from Hamilton, Ontario. This is for an extension of the Lakeshore West line that operates out of Toronto's Union Station.
