Looks like Windsor is back in positive growth again for the past few years

Winnipeg has passed Quebec in population

come July 1, 2012

Kitchener-Waterloo and London will surpass the 500,000 population mark

in 2013

Toronto should surpass 6,000,000
Montreal has a good chance to pass 4,000,000
Vancouver has a good chance to pass 2,500,000

It is good to see us back in growth mode. Even though we were so hard hit by the last recession, the last couple of years have been pretty good. Now if we could only get that unemployment rate back down to reasonable levels, we'd be doing great and have more optomism in the region.

It will be a moot point if one more person moves into Caledonia in the next 5 years. Hamilton CMA will gain 50,000 people instantly.

Love these charts. For all the talk of decline (real or imminent), Montreal still added 185K over 5 years. Not too shabby, me thinks. Just behind Vancouver, and ahead of the usual suspects.

Yeah, Montreal seems to be doing just fine. And even if it weren't growing much it would still be a great city. Most of the growth in Canada is just new housing pods and Wal-Marts.

There's a tendency for people to fixate way too much on growth rates, and journalists love to weave them into over-the-top narratives that take on a life of their own. It is so crazy that people were making "last one out, turn out the lights" comments about Winnipeg because it is only growing by 2/3 as much as Calgary or whatever. It shouldn't take much thought at all to realize how absurd that is. I can't tell if people don't think at all or if they are just innumerate.

St. John's population estimate that's listed in the original post is actually lower than the census count by about 500 people (196,966 census count). None the less, any growth is great growth in the area!

Is it me or 2010-2011 has been slower than previous years? Could it be an effect of the economy?

The census is a survey count of all the people on a specific day (Census Day, on or about May 15 in a year ending in 1 or 6). The estimates are based on a wide variety of data, like building permits and housing starts, births and deaths, immigration, employment, and so on. For simple population numbers, they're more accurate than the census. The benefit of the census is that you get extremely detailed demographic information, but the actual number of people is lower because some people don't respond. Estimates are based on other sources of information, so they're not compromised by people not participating in the census.

It's two different sets of numbers derived from two different methodologies, but the census data is used to determine some things in the estimates, like birth and death rates based on the age demographics data it provides. Because that data is not yet released, these estimates are still using data from the 2006 census. It isn't until the 2013 estimates that we'll see data from the 2011 census incorporated into the formula.

even in the census results they state for the most accurate/upto date results you should view the post censal estimates.

Surprised to see Victoria not growing that fast, I always assumed that it was like a Vancouver junior in that department.

Count the number of ''jumps'' here; 2007-2008 (1), 2008-2009 (2), 2009-2010 (3), 2010-2011 (4), or 2011 - (minus) 2007 = 4. I can't believe I'm really doing this..(!)
