SOM's los angeles federal courthouse breaks ground

the los angeles federal courthouse designed by SOM has broken ground. the civic building is aiming for LEED platinum, as part of a greater municipal effort to construct environmentally efficient facilities. located in the city's downtown area, the 600,000 square foot building is slated to feature precedent-setting sustainable measures for american civic structures-- project leaders have even discussed the possibility of selling the previous courthouse to be refitted with community-building programming. the minimal form, dubbed 'the cube', will lend gravitas and significance to a formerly vacant lot in the city with a pleated, glazed skin.

EM2N draws from adolf loos for striped parisian social housing

part of the ‘réaménagement de la porte pouchet’ swiss architects EM2N has designed a remarkably striped apartment building in paris that draws from the adolf loos 1928 proposal for the josephine baker house. whereas with loos the horizontal stripes were to be made from black and white marble, expanded metal was used for the alternating design.

ripolltizon arquitectos | Consell Kindergarten
in Architecture by editor — 9:00 am | August 16, 2013

Consell Kindergarten is the extension of the School Complex “Bartomeu Ordines” in Consell, Mallorca (Spain). The new building is composed of: six classrooms (for children between 3 and 5 years old), one psychomotor classroom and a dining area including kitchen. The design strategy intends to accommodate the whole building area in the ground floor and thus create a fluid relation between the interior and the play grounds.

Researching New Tectonic Possibilities In Architecture / Robotically Fabricated Pavilion In Stuttgart
By: Marija Bojovic | August - 21 - 2013

This interdisciplinary project of the new research pavilion is conducted by researchers of Institute for Computational Design (ICD) together with the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart. The pavilion is entirely robotically fabricated, from glass and carbon fiber composites and it investigates the eventual co-relation between bio-mimetic design strategies and new processes of robotic production. The new composite construction paradigm in architecture is rooted in morphological principles of arthropods’ exoskeletons.

Educational Center Erasmus University Medical Center
Claus en Kaan Architecten

This design is prompted by the desire for a better integration of all the teaching facilities connected with the Medical Centre.

The Medical Centre thereby hopes to optimise the synergy between the departments, their staff and their expertise. This ambition calls for a new building that matches both the goals and the existing buildings on location.
